Dons Tie Golden Bears Under the Fog

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- On a foggy cool night on the Hilltop, the USF Dons women's soccer team (2-1-2) battled hard with fellow Bay Area school the California Golden Bears (2-1-1) in a match that ended in a 1-1 tie at Negoesco Stadium on Thursday evening.

Battling through typical San Francisco conditions that made it hard to see the other side of the field, the Dons defense was strong throughout as they battled hard to earn the draw against another quality opponent.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both sides battled hard in the first 45 minutes of play contending with the traditional San Francisco fog as the match was scoreless at the half.
  • USF was able to get the scoring started at the 74 minute mark as freshman midfielder Alex Carpio found the back of the net to give the Dons the 1-0 advantage.
  • Cal responded just three minutes later with a goal of their own to make it 1-1 through 78 minutes of play.
  • Each side played hard in the final minutes of action denying opportunities to score the game-winning goal as the 90 minutes of game play ended with USF picking up their second tie of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Carpio recorded the highlight of the night by scoring her first career collegiate goal to give USF the lead in the second half. The true freshman has been a key piece for the Dons off the bench as she has recorded a goal and an assist through the first five matches of the season.
  • In goal for the Dons junior Megan Nail did a great job serving as the last line of defense for USF as she recorded four saves in her fifth start of the season.
  • Junior defender Jamesen Ward was aggressive all night on the offensive end as she recorded four total shots as she constantly put pressure on the Golden Bears' defense.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"I thought 10, 15, 20 minutes into the second half we played really well when we got the goal. At the end of the day we didn't complete the mission we need to be able to hold out them off and complete the W but we'll learn from it and we have a lot of work ahead of us. It was a great effort by the girls tonight, the energy was unbelievable on a crazy night with the fog and wind. Alex came on and scored a brilliant goal and she's gotten better with every game."

UP NEXT:
The Dons' three match home stand continues next Thursday Sept. 8 when they welcome the Baylor Bears (1-2-1) to Negoesco Stadium at 7:00 p.m. USF last faced the Bears a season ago in Waco as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
