Dons Battle Until Final Whistle Against Falcons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Competing in their final non-conference match of the year, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (6-1-2) battled until the final whistle on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately fell short against Air Force (1-4-2) in a tight battle at Negoesco Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • The Dons started off dangerous in the attack as Max Chretien recorded the first shot of the match just 50 seconds after kickoff. At the 27 minute mark, junior Rodrigo Bueno ripped a shot from the outside of the box that was just tipped over the crossbar by Air Force goalkeeper John Byszewski.
  • With three minutes left in the half, the Falcons switched on the attack and had two shots nearly a minute apart, but USF goalkeeper Eric Waltz came up with two key saves to keep the match scoreless going. After battling back and forth for the first 45 minutes, the half ended with three shots recorded by USF and four from the Air Force as the game remained tied at 0-0.
  • Starting the second half strongly, Nathan Simeon aimed to find the back of the net out of the locker room, but sent one in just wide of the goal from his position outside the box on the right side of the field at the 45:53 mark of the match.
  • After attacks from both sides throughout the half, the Falcons would score game's lone goal at the 73:57 mark off of a header from junior Thaddaeus Dewing.
  • Down the stretch, the Dons fought hard to continue their offensive attack in hopes of getting a goal of their own, but were unable to find it as Air Force held on to their lead to secure the victory over USF, 1-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Coming onto the field in the 26th minute of the match, Bueno made an impact on the game as he recorded two of the three shots taken for the Dons in the first half.
  • In goal, Waltz impressively racked up four saves for the Dons in the match against the Falcons, marking the fifth time this year he has tallied four plus saves.
  • Junior Max Chretien led the attack for USF by recording three shots in the match, his second best offensive effort so far this season.

  • Head Coach Chris Brown on the match: Today was a tough game against a good college soccer team. Air Force is a very athletic and organized team that has had some good results against some of the top teams in the country. I thought we had some good moments, but we weren't clinical enough in the final third of the match and Air Force capitalized on a play that was uncharacteristic for us. We will learn from this game and be prepared for our first conference game on Saturday at LMU."

UP NEXT:
USF will begin West Coast Conference play for this season with a road match on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 pm at Loyola Marymount. Live streaming and live stats will be available via the team's schedule page.
