Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Team Effort Leads Dons Past Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Bouncing back from a tough road loss, the USF Dons women's basketball team (14-7, 4-5) picked up an impressive 69-56 road victory over the San Diego Toreros (10-10, 4-5) on Saturday afternoon from Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Dons played tremendous team basketball as they shot 52% from the field as a team while holding the hometown Toreros to just 33% shooting while also forcing 10 turnovers. Ioanna Krimili led the way for the Dons by scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while also knocking down four three-point shots in the win.

Today's victory over San Diego was also the 100th victory at USF for Dons' head coach Molly Goodenbour who's in her seventh season leading the program.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons got the scoring started for both sides as Jessica McDowell-White made a pull up jump shot with USD responding to go on a 12-4 run ahead of the first media timeout. USF found their footing late in the quarter as Jasmine Gayles and McDowell-White combined for a 6-0 run to get the Dons back in the game at 18-16 after the first quarter.
  • Gayles and Krimili both came out in the second quarter looking to score as Jasmine recorded a lay-up with a strong finish before Ioanna knocked down a three to give USF the 21-20 lead. As both teams went back-and-forth trading baskets, USF was able to build some separation as Krimili connected on another three ball and Abby Rathbun followed with a lay-up of her own on a nice up and under move to put USF up 32-26. Kennedy Dickie knocked down a pair of free throws right before the half to put the Dons up 34-29 at the break.
  • Out of the half, the Dons gave their lead some addition cushion as Dickie made a corner three and Rathbun followed with a fast break lay-up that put USF up 10 and forced San Diego into a timeout. USF continued to build their lead throughout the quarter as Krimili knocked down a three late in the quarter to build the lead to 52-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • San Diego came out looking to cut into the lead by scoring four quick points in the quarter before Gayles scored a fast break lay up that put the Dons back up 11. The Dons lead wouldn't go back to single digits for the rest of the game as Gayles knocked down a late three off a Krimili assist to pick up the 69-56 road win to move back above .500 away from the Hilltop.
 NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Krimili led all scorers on Saturday going for 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, to go along with four rebounds, a pair of assists, a couple of steals and four made three-point shots against USD. Ioanna is now fourth on the Dons' all-time scoring list and has made over 250 three-point shots at USF.
  • Providing a strong scoring punch off the bench, Gayles put in 15 points for the Dons on 6-for-11 shooting from the field as well as two rebounds and an assist against the Toreros.
  • Doing great work down low, Dickie scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to go along with an assist and a key block against USD while also attempting six free throws on Saturday.
  • Running the offense at a high level, McDowell-White scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting while dishing out seven assists, grabbing four rebounds and coming away with two steals against the Toreros.
