Dons Drop Wednesday Night Game to Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. -- Returning to action after more than a week away due to rain throughout the state, the USF Dons baseball team (3-2) dropped a hard fought late inning battle with the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-3) in a 7-5 final score at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Christian Stapleton had a standout performance against the Bulldogs going 3-for-3 at the plate while driving in three runs and drawing a walk hitting third in the batting order. On the mound, eight Dons pitchers combined to allow just a pair of earned runs while striking out six Fresno State hitters as a staff.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons were able to score the game's first run as Stapleton reached on a single and scored on a passed ball that got by the Bulldogs' catcher. Fresno State was able to scratch across a run of their own in the bottom of the first to even the score.
  • USF's offense continued to shine the first time through the batting order as Logan Azem reached base on a hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance as a Don and came around to score on an RBI single from Harris Williams III. Stapleton went on to drive in Williams III two batters later with an RBI single of his own.
  • Fresno State would go on to score the next three runs of the game as they added one back in the bottom of the second and added on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly as the home team led 4-2 through four innings.
  • Fighting back in the middle innings, Darius Foster led off the USF sixth with a single and Williams III doubled to put runners on first and third with nobody out. Stapleton came through once again to drive in both runners as USF was able to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Bulldogs were able to scratch across three runs in the final two innings of play and kept USF off the scoreboard as they picked up the 7-5 win on Wednesday night.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Stapleton had a big game at the dish reaching base four times going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a walk against Fresno State.
  • Williams III did another great job out of the leadoff spot as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI double against the Bulldogs.
  • Playing in his first game as a Don, Azem was able to score a run as he reached base via a hit by pitch in his first at-bat for USF.
  • Making his first appearance out of the USF bullpen, Matt McConnell tossed a scoreless inning and struck out a pair of batters as Gabriel Barrett, Hunter Holzemer and Oscar Lepe all had scoreless apperances as well on Wednesday.
