SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning to action riding a four game home winning streak, the USF Dons baseball team (5-2) scored early and often in the second game of their three game series against the Villanova Wildcats (1-8) as they picked up the 9-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
Harris Williams III got the offense going with authority as he hit a grand slam in the bottom the second, while right-hander
Jesse Barron tossed seven innings and allowed just one earned run to help the Dons improve to 5-1 on their home diamond this season.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Dons' offense came alive in the second as TJ Rogers walked and Lane Oliphant singled before a key at-bat from Tyler Martinez loaded the bases with two outs for Williams III. Ahead in the count 3-1, Williams III was able to deposit a ball over the yellow line in right field that gave USF the 4-0 lead and control of the game early.
- Villanova was able to claw back a bit in the top of the third as they scored a pair of unearned runs following a USF misplay, but the Dons waited very little time to author their own response. Christian Stapleton began the USF half of the third with a double to left center field and then came around to score on an RBI single from Mario DeMera that grew the Dons' lead to 5-2 heading into the fourth inning.
- The Wildcats would score their final run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth on an opposite field home run, but the hometown nine were ready to continue building their leda in the bottom half as T. Martinez tripled with two out in the inning and scored on a wild pitch as the Dons lead 6-3 at the end of the fourth inning.
- DeMera was ready again to provide an offensive jolt for his team with a double to left and then came around to score on a Rogers' sacrifice fly to center field that grew USF's lead to 7-3 through five innings.
- USF would score their final two runs of the game in the seventh and eighth as Rogers reached on a walk and came around to score on a Wildcats' wild pitch in the seventh, while Williams III scored his second run of the game in the eighth on a Stapleton sacrifice fly that put the Dons ahead 9-3 heading into the nice.
- Coming out of the Dons' bullpen, Ryan Yerby threw a pair of scoreless innings as he struck out three Villanova hitters as USF secured the 9-3 win and the series victory on Saturday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Williams III was a force at the plate on Saturday as he reached base five times going 3-for-3 with the grand slam, four RBI, two walks and a pair of runs scored against the Wildcats.
- Barron turned his second strong start of the season in a row as he threw seven innings allowing just one earned run to go along with two hits, two walks and four strikeouts while throwing 88 pitches against Villanova.
- Continuing to provide a strong presence in the middle of the batting order, DeMera went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI double and a run scored on Saturday afternoon.

- Slamming the door out of the bullpen, Yerby crusied his way through his two innings of work allowing just one hit and a walk while punching out three hitters in route to the win on Saturday.
