USF Drops Middle Game of Series Against Pepperdine

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Competing in their second conference game of the weekend, the USF Dons baseball team (14-16, 5-9) fell just short in a close late innings battle dropping the second game of their series with the Pepperdine Waves (12-20, 5-9) by an 8-5 final score at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Waves were able to get on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Looking to answer back, Will Asby smacked an opposite field triple to left and came around to score on a Blake Atkins sacrifice fly that cut Pepperdine's lead in half to make it 2-1 after two innings of play.
  • Pepperdine was able to score three more runs in the top of the fourth inning as they built a 5-1 lead heading into the middle innings.
  • Trailing heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Dons began to rally starting off with a lead-off solo home run from Harris Williams III that was followed by a Christian Stapleton walk and an Asby single to put runners on second and third with USF chasing three runs. Atkins came through once again with an RBI single to plate Stapleton and Tyler Martinez once again came up big with a two-run single to center that scored Asby and Atkins to even the score at five apiece.
  • The Waves would go on to score the final three runs of the game as they took the second game of the series against USF securing an 8-5 win on Saturday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Williams III had a big afternoon at the dish as he went 3-for-4 with a walk and his fourth home run of the season to spark the Dons' rally.
  • Asby had another strong game on Saturday as he went 2-for-4 with a triple, walk and a pair of runs scored against the Waves.
  • Atkins was able to drive in a pair of runs against Pepperdine as he went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the middle game of the series.
  • Coming off the bench, Logan Azem had a pinch hit double late in the game to raise his batting average to .318 on the season.
