SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Wrapping up their weekend in Southern California, the USF Dons baseball team (14-21, 5-13) put together a spirit comeback before ultimately coming up short against the San Diego Toreros (18-19-1, 11-7) by a 9-7 final score on Sunday afternoon.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Following a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Dons were able to score a pair of runs in the top of the second as Patrick Keighran worked a one out walk and then came around to score on Mattie Thomas' two-run home run that gave USF the 2-0 lead early.
- San Diego would go on to score the next four runs of the game as they plated a pair in the bottom of the second and added two more in the third to lead 4-2.
- The Dons would then comeback to even the score in their half of the fifth as Harris Williams III and Mario DeMera began the inning with singles and Williams III came around to score on a Will Asby RBI fielder's choice to make it 4-3. Keighran would come through for his team as well with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home DeMera to even the score at four.
- USD would quickly author a four-run response in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on an addition run as they held the 9-4 advantage with USF looking to draw closer.
- Asby played a huge roll in the Dons' comeback as he smashed a solo home run to right in the top of the seventh to get USF back within four, and then in his next at-bat an inning later smashed his second round tripper of the game to score Williams III to bring the visitors back within a pair of runs at 9-7.
- San Diego would piece together a scoreless top of the ninth as they earned the 9-7 victory on their home diamond on Sunday afternoon from Fowler Park.
