Cougars Outhit Dons in Series Finale

PROVO, Utah - Aiming to secure their second straight conference series win on the road, the University of San Francisco baseball team (13-13, 4-8 WCC) could not climb back from an early deficit on Saturday afternoon as BYU (11-19, 5-7 WCC) took down the Dons, 15-6 , to wrap up the weekend at Miller Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting little time, Luke Anderson gave the Cougars an early 2-0 lead with his first home run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Two innings later, BYU extended their advantage to 4-0 with two more runs on two hits, which included Anderson's second long ball of the afternoon.
  • Fighting back, Patrick Keighran walked to begin the top of the fourth before Blake Atkins singled through the left side to give USF runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt from Logan Azem moved the runners up a base, Mario DeMera reached on a throwing error by Chad Call as both Keighran and Atkins came around to score on the play and trim the BYU lead to 4-2.
  • Adding insurance in the fifth, the Cougars tallied four more runs on three hits and one error as they maintained a 9-2 advantage heading into the sixth inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, USF remained on the heels of BYU as DeMera lined a two-run double down the right field line that scored Atkins and Darius Foster to keep the Dons within striking distance, 9-4.
  • Answering back once more, the Cougars pushed across two more runs in the home half of the sixth, including Anderson's third big fly of the contest. Through six innings, BYU held an eight-run lead, 12-4.
  • Making the most of the crisp mountain air, Christian Stapleton launched his third home run of the series in the top of the seventh as the Dons inched closer, 12-5.
  • Seeming to respond to every push that USF made, BYU added on two runs in their turn at the plate in the seventh followed by one final run in the eighth as they remained in control, 15-5, after eight innings.
  • Getting one last rip in, Stapleton blasted his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth for USF's final run. Holding on following the round tripper, BYU secured the series victory by taking the finale, 15-6.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Having another strong day at the dish, Stapleton jacked two home runs for the second straight day as he now leads the team with 7 home runs. Notably, his team-leading 34 RBI still leads the WCC as well.
  • Swinging a scorching hot bat, DeMera logged his team-leading tenth multi-hit game of the season and his fifth performance with three hits. Overall, the junior has reached base safely in 16 straight games as he is now north of the .400 mark with a team-leading .402 batting average following Sunday's contest.
  • Enjoying his best day as a Don, Atkins finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one double. For the graduate transfer, this outing marked his first three-hit performance in the green and gold.
