SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Getting back to work on Saturday afternoon, the USF Dons baseball team (16-25, 7-16) competed hard as a team before ultimately coming up short in extra innings to the Santa Clara Broncos (26-15, 12-8) by a 3-2 final score from Stephen Schott Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Both team's starting pitchers were on their game early as Dons' right-hander Adam Shew and the Broncos' staff took turns exchanging scoreless frames up until the bottom of the fifth.
- Santa Clara plated the first run of the game in their half of the fifth on an RBI single, but Shew was able to come up big with three straight strikeouts to strand a runner on third base with the home team leading 1-0.
- Looking to rally in the top of the seventh, Will Asby was able to reach base with a two-out single, Patrick Keighran walked and then Blake Atkins was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Coming through with a key hit, Ryan Martinez hit an opposite field single to right field scoring both Asby and Keighran to give USF the 2-1 lead.
- The Broncos were able to respond in the bottom of the eighth with the tying run that eventually forced extra innings with a 2-all tie.
- Breaking the tie with the game-winning run in the 11th, Santa Clara took the second game of the series by a 3-2 final score on their home diamond.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Setting the tone with a strong outing on the mound, Shew pitched five innings of one run ball as he allowed eight hits, while only allowing one walk and striking out six Bronco hitters.
- Putting together a multi-hit performance for his team, Asby went 2-for-5 at the dish with a run scored against Santa Clara on Saturday.
- Collecting a key hit late in the game for the Dons, R. Martinez went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the middle game of the series.
- Pitching key late innings in long relief, Weston Lombard threw 4 1/3 innings and only allowed two runs while striking out three Santa Clara bats on Saturday.
