Dons Fall to No. 23 Georgia in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. – After two consecutive victories, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (2-5-2) fell to No. 23 Georgia (4-1-3), 5-0, Sunday morning.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco was firing early in the contest, with five shots attempted within the first six minutes of the match, including a shot on-target by Marissa Vasquez that Georgia goalkeeper Lauren Swoopes saved.
  • Later in the period, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute, with midfielder Nicole Vernis and defender Kiera Staude setting up midfielder Aly Akers to open up a 1-0 lead.
  • The defense was the focus for the latter part of the period, as both teams attempted six combined shots in the following 21 minutes of play. However, the Bulldogs added a second goal shortly after Nicole Vernis found midfielder Ellie Gilbert for the score in the 39th minute.
  • Though San Francisco outshot Georgia 9-7 in the first half of play, the Dons would head into the locker room facing a two-goal deficit.
  • Despite a valiant effort from the Dons in the second half, the Bulldogs continued to add to the lead, securing the win.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Vasquez led San Francisco with four total shots, with two being on goal, while Samantha Reyes added one shot on goal.
  • Kira Ybarra played the entire 90 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.
