MORAGA, Calif. – Continuing its four-game road trip in the East Bay, the University of San Francisco baseball team (17-21, 1-9 WCC) dropped the series opener at Saint Mary's (22-13, 7-3 WCC), falling 7-1 Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Saint Mary's set the tone early as it took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Christian Almanza connected on a two-run home run over the right-field wall.
- After three scoreless frames, the Gaels added to their lead, breaking open the game with a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Pierce, extending the advantage to 6-0.
- Another run came across in the following frame on a solo home run from Coleman Schmidt, pushing the Gaels' lead to 7-0.
- San Francisco got on the board in the top of the eighth as Myles Kallinger scored on a Kody Watanabe single to right field. With one out on the board, Kallinger punched through the left side of the infield, and Charles-Etienne Pelletier later walked to push Kallinger into scoring position. Watanabe shortly followed with a single to right field, scoring Kallinger to cut the deficit to 7-1.
- The Dons failed to score in the final frame, as Ryan Wiltse set the green and gold down in order to solidify the victory for the Gaels.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Kallinger extended his hitting streak to four games after going one-for-three at the plate with a single in the eighth inning. In the last four games, Kallinger is batting .500 with five hits in 10 at-bats and has scored three runs.
