Volleyball Set to Open Conference Play at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of San Francisco volleyball team (7-5) begins West Coast Conference play when they travel to face Bay Area foe Santa Clara (4-6, 0-1 WCC) on at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Leavey Center.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco concluded nonconference play at home, earning back-to-back victories over Air Force and Seattle U at the USF Challenge last weekend.
  • The Dons opened the tournament on Friday, Sept. 20, dominating the Falcons, earning their fourth straight-set win this season. The green and gold followed with another convincing victory on Saturday, Sept. 21, sweeping the Redhawks to finish the tournament undefeated.
  • The Dons' seven nonconference victories are the most the team has accumulated since earning 11 during the 2015 season.
  • Michalina Rola has been a dominant force for the green and gold throughout nonconference play, as she leads the team in overall points (160) and kills (139).
  • Astrid Puig has been an asset on both sides of the ball with 131 kills and 42 total blocks, suitable for second most on the team behind Hayden Goodman's 58. Against Seattle U, she propelled the team to another sweep by recording a team-high 11 kills. 
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
  • Beginning the WCC slate at home, Santa Clara heads into the weekend following a 3-1 loss to Washington State on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Leavey Center.
  • The Broncos' record dropped to 4-6 and are currently in eighth place in the league standings as they have failed to win a match since defeating Fresno State, 3-2, on Saturday, Sept. 14.
  • Alayna Crabtree led the Bronco's attack against the Cougars with 16 kills and a season-best .433 hitting percentage. Overall, she leads the team in kills with 120 through 10 matches this season.
  • Nive Tuileta leads the Broncos in assists with 294 overall, ranking eighth in the WCC, as she reached double digits in every match. On defense, Tuileta has 80 digs to lead the team. 
SERIES HISTORY:
Since 2005, Santa Clara leads the overall series against San Francisco with a record of 19-13. In the most recent matchup, the Broncos earned a five-set victory over the Dons on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
