BOISE, Idaho — The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (1-1) got a 29-point showing from the bench, but fell 83-68 to Boise State (2-0) on the road on Sunday at ExtraMile Arena.
The Dons had two players score in double figures, led by Paula Tirado, who had 13 points. Noelia Mourino added 11 points and seven rebounds and Michelle Ugwah added seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
Candy Edokpaigbe pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for San Francisco, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into four second chance points.
San Francisco forced 24 Boise State turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Sunday's game. The Dons turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ugwah's two steals led the way for San Francisco.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.
- San Francisco then cut the Broncos lead to 28-23 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Ugwah, to tie the game at 28. Boise State then took control, putting the Dons at a 36-33 disadvantage heading into halftime.
- Boise State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 57-46 advantage before San Francisco went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Tirado, to trim its deficit to 57-51 with 13 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. San Francisco played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
- Boise State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 76-59 advantage before San Francisco went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Edokpaigbe's three, to shrink the deficit to 76-64 with 2:34 to go in the contest. Boise State responded and outscored the Dons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-68. San Francisco took advantage of six Boise State turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading the offensive charge for the Dons, Tirado scored a career-high 13 points off the bench, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown in the second game of the season after missing all of last season due to injury.
- Recording her first career double-figure scoring game, Noelia Mouriño scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
