DONS AT A GLANCE:
- Ending their recent struggles, San Francisco earned a much-needed victory in Tupelo last weekend with a 65-62 neutral site win over Mississippi State on Sunday, Dec. 7. USF led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Bulldogs stormed back in the second half to take a 62-61 lead with 25 seconds remaining. Keeping their poise, Mookie Cook muscled his way to the free throw line on the next possession, putting the Dons up 63-62, followed by Tyrone Riley IV stealing MSU's subsequent inbound pass for a dunk to push the advantage to three, securing a 65-62 victory.
- Putting together the best performance of his sophomore season thus far, Riley IV led the team with a season-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 shooting from deep to go along with six rebounds, two blocks, and an assist in 34 minutes against Mississippi State. Cook once again recorded new career-highs of 11 rebounds and five assists to go along with nine points and three blocks in his second career start. As a squad, San Francisco only turned the ball over six times against the Bulldogs, a new-season low, and the fewest turnovers by the Dons in a regular season game since Feb. 20, 2024 (5, at Saint Mary's, L, 70-66).
- With just three games to go before WCC action, USF leads the conference in three-pointers made per game, averaging 9.6 makes per game from downtown, tied for the 74th-highest average in the nation.
- San Francisco is set for just its second and final road game of nonconference play, looking for its first nonconference road victory since Dec. 6, 2023, at Vanderbilt (W, 73-60). USF played at Memphis for its first game away from home this season, falling to the Tigers in a tight 76-70 contest at FedExForum.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS:
- Following an NIT appearance last season, Saint Louis (SLU) has been off to a hot start to the 2025-26 campaign with an 8-1 record, coming off its second 40-point victory of the season with a 107-65 blowout win over Central Michigan on Sunday, Dec. 7. Four Billikens scored in double figures in the win over the Chippewas, led by junior guard Quentin Jones' season-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from three.
- The offensive attack has been a balanced effort for SLU so far this season as five Billikens are averaging double-digit scoring this season, led by seniors Robbie Avila and Dion Brown, each averaging 12.4 points per game. Scoring efficiently, redshirt junior guard Kellen Thames is shooting 72.5 percent from the field this season, second-best in the Atlantic 10.
- As a unit, Saint Louis leads the A-10 in points per game (91.6), scoring margin (+20.9), opponent field goal percentage (37.5), rebounds per game (42.4), rebounding margin (11.3), and assists per game (17.5) in the early season. Nationally, the Billikens are tied for the top free throw shooting percentage as a team across Division I, shooting 81.28 percent from the line to tie Saint Joseph's. SLU also ranks in the top 15 in the country in rebounding margin (fifth), scoring margin (tied for 11th), rebounds per game (tied for 12th), scoring offense (13th), and opponent field goal percentage (13th).
- With four games remaining on the schedule before A-10 action, Saint Louis is on pace for its best nonconference record since 2019-20, when the Billikens went 11-2 in nonconference play. Diving into the metrics, the Billikens rank 29th in the country in the NCAA's NET Rankings, 39th in the Bart Torvik rankings, and 42nd in KenPom.
