SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (2-2) dropped the final game of its four-game set against Sacramento State (2-2), falling 19-11 Monday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Falling behind in the first inning, San Francisco fell into a 4-0 hole following Sacramento State's early offensive onslaught.
- Despite getting a run back as Kenny DeCelle scored on a Jordan Lewis RBI double in the top half of the first, the Hornets added four more tallies in the second inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
- Battling back in the bottom of the fourth inning, Matty Fung kickstarted the rally with a one-out double before DeCelle followed with a single to plate Fung, trimming the deficit to 8-2. Two more runs came across in the inning as Patrick Keighran earned a bases-loaded walk, and Tyler Harries posted an RBI groundout to get within four, 8-4, through four innings.
- With Sacramento State leading 9-5 in the sixth after both teams traded runs in the previous inning, the Hornets broke the game open with five runs to take a commanding 14-5 edge.
- The Dons answered in the following half-inning, scoring five runs on four hits to get within 14-10. Nick Walsh, DeCelle, Lewis, and TJ Rogers recorded RBI throughout the frame as Rogers concluded the scoring with a two-out, two-RBI single to center field.
- The Hornets tallied five more runs in the top of the eighth inning, highlighted by a JP Smith grand slam to go ahead 19-10.
- Charles-Etienne Pelletier added a solo home run in the final frame, his first long ball of the season, to bring San Francisco one-run closer at 19-11.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- DeCelle and Lewis combined for seven hits, five RBI, three walks, four stolen bases, and four runs scored throughout the contest. DeCelle recorded a season-high four hits while leading the team in runs (three) and RBI (three). The duo also recorded two extra-base hits, totaling one double apiece.
- Rogers, Harries, Pelletier, Walsh, Fung, and Zack Ramppen also recorded base hits to help guide the Dons offensively.
- Pelletier notched his second career home run, a solo blast over the left-field wall in the ninth inning. Pelletier last hit a home run on May 17, 2024, at LMU.
- In 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, Dylan Brown shined as he allowed just two hits and struck out a team-high three batters.
- As a team, San Francisco posted a .317 batting average, its third straight game totaling a .300 batting average or better.
