Ten-Run Seventh Inning Propels Dons to Series Win Over Chippewas

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (5-3) secured the series win on Sunday afternoon in a slugfest, defeating Central Michigan (2-6) 15-3 at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco recorded the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning as Jordan Lewis connected on his second home run of the season, a solo blast over the left-field wall for a 1-0 lead.
  • Adding to their advantage in the bottom half of the third inning, TJ Rogers came through with a long RBI single to right center, scoring Kenny DeCelle to give the Dons a 2-0 lead. Patrick Keighran followed with a two-RBI double, while JT Amaral added an RBI single to push the margin to 5-0.
  • Central Michigan trimmed the lead to three in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to get to 5-3. Cole Prout recorded a solo home run, and Nathan Ball singled up the middle to score Jake Kutella.
  • Breaking the game open in the seventh inning, San Francisco scored 10 runs as 15 batters came to the plate throughout the frame. Rogers and Keighran combined for two hits, two walks, and three RBI during the inning, while Eddison Esquivel capped off the onslaught with his first-career grand slam to give the green and gold a 15-2 edge. Zack Ramppen and Charles-Etienne Pelletier also contributed offensively during the inning as Pelletier notched an RBI single and Ramppen a two-run double down the right-field line.  
  • The Chippewas cut into their deficit in the eighth inning when Rees Campanale doubled down the left-field line, scoring Prout, to get within 15-3.
  • San Francisco held Central Michigan scoreless in the top of the ninth despite the Chippewas threatening with runners on the corners with two outs. Wesley Harwell pitched the final frame for the green and gold as he secured the 15-3 win, allowing only one walk and a hit-by-pitch.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Six players recorded multi-hit performances as Keighran led San Francisco with two hits, two walks, and four RBI. Along with Keighran, Lewis (three hits), Rogers (two hits), Amaral (two hits), Pelletier (two hits), and DeCelle (two hits) recorded multiple hits during the contest.
  • Lewis led the program in base knocks as he went three-for-five at the plate and scored two runs.
  • Esquivel capped off his impressive series with his second home run of the season, a grand slam in the seventh inning, drove in four runs, and registered one walk.
  • In his second start of the season, Aidan Risse picked up the win after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out five batters in 5.1 innings.
  • As a team, San Francisco matched its season high in total runs with 15 while posting highs in RBI (14), hits (15), doubles (five), and triples (one).

San Francisco wraps up its six-game homestand when it takes on Washington at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Benedetti Diamond.
