Dons Salvage Series, Defeat Spartans in Series Finale

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (6-6) salvaged a win in the series final, defeating San Jose State (8-3) 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Jose State scored the game's opening run in the top of the first inning when Zach Chamizo punched a solo home run over the right-center field wall for an early 1-0 advantage.
  • San Francisco responded in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to gain a 2-1 lead. With two runners on the corners with one out, a Patrick Keighran fielder's choice scored Kenny DeCelle to even the game at a run apiece. Later on, Zack Ramppen singled to right field, plating Keighran for the go-ahead run.
  • Adding to the margin in the following inning, DeCelle connected on a two-run home run to left field for a 4-1 lead, scoring Kody Watanabe, who reached on a fielder's choice early in the frame. Keighran later solidified the three-run second inning, reaching safely on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder, Alex Fernandes, scoring TJ Rogers to put the Dons up 5-1.
  • Both teams traded runs in the third inning as the green and gold led 6-3. Stealing two bases after earning a seven-pitch walk, JT Amaral scored the Dons' sixth run after a throwing error from the catcher sailed into left field while he swiped third base.
  • The Dons' final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Matty Fung scored on a bases-loaded balk by the pitcher Nolan George for a 7-3 advantage.
  • The Spartans rallied in the top of the eighth, getting to within 7-3 following an error by Fung on a ground ball to second base, plating Zach Tallerman.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • DeCelle recorded his team-leading fifth multi-hit game of the season as he went two-for-five at the plate with a home run, two RBI, scored two runs, and stole two bases. He also posted his first long ball of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning.
  • Seven other players recorded base hits, highlighted by RBI singles from Keighran and Ramppen.
  • A stellar performance on the mound from Aidan Risse propelled San Francisco as he pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out two batters.
  • Hunter Holzemer and Dylan Brown combined for four innings out of the bullpen, holding San Jose State to just one run on two hits and recording four strikeouts.
