SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (11-11, 1-0 WCC) opened West Coast Conference play with a dominating 8-4 victory over Santa Clara (8-10, 0-1 WCC) Friday evening at Stephen Schott Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED:
- Santa Clara gained an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning as Mateo Garcia scored the game's first run on a Dylan Joyce two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield.
- Quickly leveling the game at a run apiece, Patrick Keighran scored the tying run on a Matteo Bellisimo base hit down in the following frame. Keighran led off the inning with a six-pitch walk and put himself into scoring position on a Jordan Lewis sacrifice bunt before scoring a batter later on Bellismo's RBI single.
- After a scoreless two innings, the Dons pulled ahead in the top of the fifth when Kenny Decelle connected on a two-run home run, plating Kody Watanabe for a 3-1 advantage.
- The green and gold recorded three more runs to their lead in the seventh inning to extend the margin to 6-1. Decelle added to his RBI total with a single down the left-field line, and Keighran followed with a knock to right field. Trevor Harmon later reached on a fielder's choice on a muffed throw by the second baseman Malcolm Williams, scoring TJ Rogers.
- San Francisco continued to expand its lead in the top half of the final frame as Lewis doubled to left center field and Harmon posted a sacrifice fly to right center to push ahead, 8-1.
- Battling back, Santa Clara trimmed its deficit in half in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs to get within 8-4. San Francisco, however, successfully notched the final out on a groundball to first base to win the series opener.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Decelle led San Francisco offensively in the series opener, going three-for-five at the plate with a home run, three RBI, and scored two runs.

- Lance Santerre shined in his sixth start of the season, pitching five stellar innings, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out three batters.
- In his best outing of 2025, Gabriel Barrett shut down Santa Clara for three innings out of the bullpen, posting zeros across the board while recording two strikeouts to lower his earned-run average significantly.
