SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Despite a late-game comeback, the University of San Francisco baseball team (7-7) dropped a narrow 7-6 decision to Nevada (8-5) in the series opener Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Nevada gained the game's first lead following two scoreless innings, jumping ahead 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Following a one-out walk and a single from Michael Ball, Sean Yamaguchi singled to deep center field, scoring Jake Harvey and Ball for the early advantage.
- After Nevada plated another run in the fourth, San Francisco recorded a tally to get on the board in the bottom half of the frame. In an eventful half inning, Kody Watanabe reached base on an error by the third baseman Yamaguchi, pushing TJ Rogers to third with one out. JT Amaral followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Rogers, to trim the deficit to 3-1.
- The Dons gained their first lead of the afternoon in the sixth inning as Eddison Esquivel recorded a grand slam to put the green and gold up 5-3. Three straight walks loaded the bases as Rogers, Patrick Keighran, and Watanabe crowded the basepath with two outs. Esquivel, pinch-hitting for Amaral, quickly homered over the right-field wall for the lead.
- In the seventh, the Dons added to their margin, as Zack Ramppen doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an error by the first baseman Jayce Dobie on a Matty Fung ground ball.
- Trailing 6-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Nevada regained the lead on a grand slam off the bat of Ball for a 7-6 advantage.
- The Wolf Pack posted three straight strikeouts in the bottom half of the ninth to solidify the come-from-behind victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Esquivel recorded his second grand slam of the season, went one-for-one at the plate, and recorded four RBI. Posting his third home run of the season, Esquivel ranks tied for fourth in the WCC and leads all freshmen in the conference.
- Along with Esquivel, Kenny DeCelle, Watanabe, and Ramppen also tallied base hits and Rogers led the team with two runs scored.
