Esquivel's Go-Ahead Home Run Leads Dons Over Wolf Pack In Extra Innings

RENO, Nev. – Eddison Esquivel's go-ahead three-run home run in the 10th inning guided the University of San Francisco baseball team (15-22) to an 11-8 victory over Nevada (20-16) Monday afternoon at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Nevada gained an early lead as Billy Ham crushed a three-run home run to right center for an early 3-0 advantage.
  • Cutting into the deficit at the top of the third, TJ Rogers scored on a throwing error by catcher Nate Snakenborg, and Jordan Lewis plated the Dons' second run later on an Esquivel RBI single.
  • After the Wolf Pack added a run in the bottom half of the frame, the green and gold chipped away and tied the game at four in the seventh.
  • San Francisco gained its first lead in the eighth, jumping ahead 5-4 on a Rogers RBI single, scoring Myles Kallinger. The Dons added insurance runs in the following frame as Brendan Burke, Logan Schweizer, and Kallinger posted three straight RBI base hits to extend the margin to 8-4.
  • Responding in the back half of the ninth, Nevada posted four runs to tie the game at eight and send the contest into extra innings.
  • With two aboard in the top of the 10th, Esquivel connected on a first-pitch opposite field three-run home run to give the Dons the lead back at 11-8.
  • Kai Yovanovich fended off a rally in the final half frame, setting the Wolf Pack down in order to secure the victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • San Francisco recorded 17 hits throughout the contest, the most by the program in a game this season.
  • Four players totaled two or more base hits, with Rogers and Burke posting four apiece, both season-highs. Esquivel (three hits) and Kallinger (two hits) also recorded multi-hit performances.
  • Esquivel led the Dons with a season-best five RBI and a home run. His go-ahead long ball in the top of the 10th marked his team-best seventh of the season while tying Rogers for the team lead in RBI with 31.
  • Returning to his hometown of Reno, Rogers went four-for-five at the plate with a triple, an RBI, and scored two runs.
  • Yovanovich pitched the game's final 1.2 innings, his second-longest outing of the season, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two batters for his first-career victory.
