Dons Rally in the Ninth, Drop Series Finale to Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (20-28, 7-14 WCC) dropped the series finale to San Diego (20-26, 14-4 WCC) in a 9-8 decision on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Diego struck first in the bottom of the second, jumping out to a 3-0 lead, highlighted by Aden Howard's two-run RBI triple.
  • San Francisco answered in the top of the third after TJ Rogers reached base and came around to score on an Eddie Esquivel RBI single to right center, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • Adding to their lead in the fourth, the Toreros put up a three-run inning sparked by Jack Gurevitch's two-run blast to left, making it 6-1.
  • Patrick Keighran answered back in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer to give the Dons life, followed by a seventh-inning RBI single from Rogers to plate JT Amaral and cut the Toreros' lead to 6-4
  • The Toreros padded their lead in the bottom half of the frame, tacking on two more runs behind an RBI from Connor Meidroth to make it 8-4.
  • The Dons rallied in the top of the ninth, starting with an RBI from Eddison Esquivel to left center that plated two runs. Brendan Burke followed with a clutch single to bring home the tying run, evening the score at eight.
  • With the bases loaded in the final half frame, a balk brought home the winning run as the Toreros walked it off to complete the series sweep.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Keighran fueled the Dons offense, going three-for-four at the plate with a two-run home run, two runs scored, and a walk.
  • Esquivel posted his 11th multi-hit game of the season, going two-for-four with a double, and led the program with three RBI.
  • Rogers added two base hits throughout the contest while recording an RBI.
UP NEXT:
San Francisco returns to Benedetti Diamond for a Tuesday afternoon matchup against UC Davis, with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
