SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Head coach Chris Brown and the University of San Francisco (USF) men's soccer program announced today that Sam Reynolds, an assistant coach for the program, has been promoted to associate head coach.
"Great coaches put people before themselves, and that's exactly who Sam Reynolds is," said Brown.
"He is selfless, hardworking, loyal to our green and gold, and relentlessly committed to our student-athletes. His impact extends far beyond soccer, as he develops character, builds relationships, and always puts our players first. Our program is stronger because of Sam. We are fortunate to have a great team and staff as we embark on an exciting 2026 season with big goals!"
Originally coming to the Hilltop in 2019, Reynolds has served as the primary recruiting coordinator and goalkeeper coach for the Dons, yielding significant success.
Most recently, he helped Lucas Jones finish third in the West Coast Conference (WCC) in save percentage (.742) and tied for third in shutouts (7) in 2025, including three clean sheets in conference play. In 2024, Reynolds guided San Francisco to finish third in the WCC in shutouts per game (.294) and tied for third with five shutouts, including a 2-0 win over. No. 2 Stanford at home on Oct. 17.
One year prior, Eric Waltz was named WCC Goalkeeper of the Year following the 2023 season as he finished tied for first in the conference in shutouts (6), third in goals against average (.848), and fourth in saves (45) and save percentage (.763) in 2023. Notably, he also helped Alejandro Munoz finish third in the WCC in saves (28) in 2020 and Brandon Keniston finish fourth (55) in 2021. Keniston also finished first in the conference in saves per game (5.5 per match) in 2021, while Munoz placed second in goals against average (.673) in 2020.
Alongside the goalkeepers, San Francisco has had a major award winner in the WCC's postseason awards the past three seasons: Ben Norris was named WCC Freshman of the Year this past fall (2025), Reid Roberts was named WCC Defender of the Year in 2024, and Waltz was named WCC Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023.
Professionally, two Dons have been drafted into the MLS with Reynolds on staff, including Roberts becoming the highest draft pick in program history when he was drafted fifth overall by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Brayden Beason was selected by Real Salt Lake with the 73rd overall pick in the third round of the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.
As a team, San Francisco has finished in the top four in the final conference standings the past two seasons: fourth in 2025 and second in 2024. This past fall, the Dons reached 10 wins for the first time since 2017, including entering back into the United Soccer Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer national rankings.
On campus, Reynolds has been vital in upholding academic standards and program culture. San Francisco has led the WCC in First Team All-Academic selections the last three years, earning at least three selections each year. David Raphael (2025) and Roberts (2024) were also named USF's Bill Russell Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year in back-to-back years, which is presented annually to the top male student-athlete at USF's end-of-year Hilltop Awards. Men's soccer also received the Spirit of '51 Award in back-to-back years (2024 and 2025), which is given annually to a team that embodies success both on the field and in the classroom by creating leaders who are ready to make an impact in the world. The award is named in honor of USF's undefeated, untied, and uninvited 1951 football team whose supreme triumph came in its stand against racial inequality.
"Sam's dedication to the university and city of San Francisco, along with his contributions to building a positive culture within the men's soccer program, is unmatched," said Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, Deputy Athletics Director for Administration and Facilities/SWA. "This well-deserved elevation in title is a testament not only to his outstanding work, but who he is as a Don: a person of character, integrity, and competitive drive."
