- Castillo was named an assistant coach of the beach volleyball team in 2025, after serving as the technical coordinator last season.
- He spent three years as an assistant coach for the De Anza College women’s beach volleyball program, coaching since the inaugural season. He was also an assistant on the women’s Indoor team. The volleyball staff received the 2023-2024 Coaching Staff of the Year award.
- Coaches boy’s volleyball for Bay to Bay Volleyball Club as an indoor assistant and as a beach volleyball coach. Most recently, he was an assistant coach for the 2025 AAU Open Division Gold medal-winning 13’s team.
- In 2021, he was an assistant coach on the USAV Boys Junior National Championships 16 USA Division Gold medal-winning team.
- Castillo has also coached for the USA Beach National Team Development Program (NTDP) Accelerator in Florida.
- As a player, John played men’s collegiate volleyball at De Anza College and Foothill College.
- He was voted Most Inspirational Player at De Anza.
- At Foothill College, he was a team captain and voted Most Inspirational Player.
- He was also the recipient of the Annual Coaches Award. Before that, he played for South Valley Volleyball Club.
- Received the FIVB Beach Coach Level 1 Certification. He also holds an Art of Coaching Beach Coach certification.
