SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- At first glance, USF's 15-point, 73-58 victory over Cal State East Bay Tuesday night in Memorial Gymnasium looks pretty routine.
Looks can be decieving, as USF needed a late surge to dispose of the Pioneers and record its first win of the year.
Junior De'End Parker finished with 18 points to lead five USF players who scored in double figures.
Cole Dickerson finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds to post his second double-double in as many games, freshman Avry Holmes came off the bench to score 13 while
Cody Doolin and Tim Derksen added 11 each to pace the Dons scoring.
Mark Tollefsen added six points and six rebounds in a productive 16 minute playing stint.
Gabe Kindred's 14 points led the Pioneers. Ota Okungbowa and Jurrell Turner added 10 each while Nick Marshall pulled down 13 rebounds.
USF and CS East Bay were tied at 43 all with 11:11 remaining and the Dons were holding a four point, 49-45 lead at the 9:42 mark. From there, USF went on a 9-0 run to boost its lead to 58-45 with 6:48 remaining and led by as many as 18 points at 67-49 with 3:01 remaining.
The two teams combined for 51 fouls in this physical contest. Neither team shot the ball well, as the Dons were 24-for-57 (42.1) from the field and just 20-for-34 (58.8) from the line. CS East Bay shot 34.8 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from the line.
"I give a lot of credit to Cal State-East Bay," said USF head coach
Rex Walters. "They played hard for 40 minutes and took it to us physically. It was a rugged game that hopefully will give us a taste of what's ahead.
"Avry (Holmes) continues to shoot the ball really well and Cole (Dickerson) has been a real force on the boards."
USF, 1-1 on the year, will be off until Monday of next week, when the Dons face American University in Washington D.C. beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Dons return to Memorial Gymasium on Saturday, Nov. 24 to face Columbia beginning at 7:00 p.m.
