Just the Facts, Ma'am
-
San Francisco (7-5) looks to rebound after dropping a tight contest to Fresno State on Dec. 21. The Dons held the halftime lead over the visiting Bulldogs, but a cold streak to start the second half allowed Fresno State to nab a lead. After the Bulldogs extended the advantage to double digits, a furious last-minute comeback was mounted, with the Dons getting the game to a one-possession affair with 3:28 to play before eventually falling.
-
The Pacific Tigers improved to 8-2 after knocking off Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif., prior to the holiday break. The Tigers drained 13 threes, accounting for more than half of its total offense in the 75-72 victory. Kendall Rodriguez led the way with 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc and finished with 19 points in 19 minutes.
In It to Win It
-
USF's 7-5 start is the best opening to a season since the Jennifer Azzi era began in 2010-11. The last time the Dons were above the .500 mark 12 games into the season was 2007-08, when USF finished 14-16 overall and notched its last double-digit win tally on the year.
Know the Foe
-
Pacific, a founding member of the West Coast Conference in 1952, currently competes in the Big West Conference. The Tigers are the Dons sixth foe from the Big West this season, and USF sports a 3-2 mark against Big West opponents with wins against Hawaii, UC Davis and Cal Poly. Pacific will be making its return to the WCC on July 1, 2013.
-
The Tigers are topping the Big West with an 8-2 overall record, two games ahead of Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside. The squad's only setbacks on the season have been against formidable foes away from home with losses to Florida and Stanford as its only blemishes.
USF and Pacific—The Series
-
The Dons and the Bulldogs have met 26 times in a series that dates back to the inaugural season of hoops on the Hilltop in 1976-77. USF owns a 15-11 overall advantage over the Tigers. Interestingly, the last 11 meetings have had alternating winners with Pacific taking the last battle, a 76-54 win in San Francisco on Dec. 11, 2010.
Quotable—Teacher vs. Student
-
“He's very intense as a coach—a yeller. He would call timeouts and make us do pushups. He's the one that taught me how to be a guard, so I learned all my moves from him. I was a center before that. I wasn't that good of a shooter back then but being a senior now I think I've improved. Maybe I'll show him some different offense. It's going to be weird to see him on the other bench.” – Mel Khlok on Pacific assistant coach and Khlok's AAU coach at NorCal Elite Black, Davin Johnson
Fresno State Remix
-
Alicia Scafidi is riding a four-game streak of double-digit rebounding efforts, and a career-high 14 boards against the Bulldogs. Incidentally, each of these performances has been since she was inserted in the starting lineup on Dec. 10. Last season, the sophomore led the team on the glass on one occasion (vs. Seattle, 8 reb), but this year she has paved the way in six of USF's 12 games.
-
Fresno State's 28 baskets ties a season high for opponent field goals made and the Bulldogs' .491 shooting percentage ranks as the highest of a USF foe this season. Fresno State committed but 11 fouls in the game, sending the Dons to the line for only seven attempts.
League Leaders
-
The Dons rank first in the WCC in field goal percentage defense (.360), second in rebounding offense (44.2 per game) and rebounding margin (+6.6). USF pulls down a league-high 30.2 defensive rebounds a night.
-
Individually, Mel Khlok is second in scoring (16.4 ppg), 3-pointers (2.3 per game). and fourth in steals (2.6 spg). Her 35.3 minutes per game ties for tops in the conference with BYU's Haley Steed.
-
Alicia Scafidi and Taylor Proctor tie for sixth in rebounding (7.2 rpg) with Taj Winston's 5.7 good for 14th. Three Dons are in the Top 15 for field goal percentage (Khlok—.459, 8th, Zhane Dikes—.424, 12th, Proctor—.419, 14th).
