USF Opens 61st WCC Season at Santa Clara
USF (7-6, 0-0 WCC) opens the 61st season of West Coast Conference basketball Wednesday night when the Dons travel to the Leavey Center to face the Santa Clara Broncos (11-3, 0-0 WCC). The game will be televised live on ESPNU with Roxy Bernstein and Steve Cleveland handling the announcing duties.
The Dons are coming off a 93-76 victory over Dominican on Saturday while the Broncos fell to top-ranked Duke, 90-77 in Durham, N.C.
Both schools are charter members of the West Coast Conference, along with Saint Mary's, San Jose State and Pacific, which will rejoin the league next season. The Dons have won 15 regular season conference titles and one WCC Tournament championship (1998). The 15 regular season titles are tied with Gonzaga for most in league history.
USF-Santa Clara Series
In a series that dates back to the 1908-09 season, Santa Clara leads the all-time series with USF, 109-101. USF has played Santa Clara (210) more times than any other opponent, with the Saint Mary's series ranking as the second-longest in USF annals at 173 games.
The Dons have swept the last two season series against Santa Clara, including both games last season (90-77 at SCU; 85-69 at USF). USF has won six of the last nine games between the two schools following a seven-game Santa Clara winning streak.
USF has come away with victories in each of its last three trips to the Leavey Center.

Walters Notches 100th Career Coaching Victory
USF's 93-76 victory over Dominican last Saturday gave USF head coach
Rex Walters his 100th career coaching victory. Walters' career record, which includes two seasons as head coach at Florida Atlantic, stands at 100-105 while his five-year USF coaching record is 69-72.
The Dons have improved their win total each year under Walters' guidance.

Three USF players --
Cole Dickerson, De'End Parker and
Cody Doolin -- rank in the top-20 nationally in various statistical categories.
Dickerson ranks fourth the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.9 boards a game, just behind of Siena's O.D. Anosike (12.4), Delaware's Jamelle Harris (12.2) and Colorado's Andre Roberson (12.1).
Parker ranks 14th nationally in three-point field goal percentage, as the junior two-guard is shooting 52.8 percent (20-for-38) from beyond the arc after 13 games.
Doolin is averaging 6.2 assists per game to rank 19th among the national leaders.
From the Field
USF is shooting 47.9 percent (106-for-221) from the field over the last four games, including a season-best 55.9 percent (33-for-59) vs. Dominican. The Dons are 5-1 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor, with its only loss in those six games coming against Ole Miss, when USF shot 50.9 percent in an 85-78 defeat.
The Dons shot 50 percent or better from the floor in four straight games vs. American, Columbia, Montana and St. John's and were shooting 47.2 percent (153-for-324) but have shot 43.7 percent (168-for-384) over the last seven games.
The Dons shot 45.3 percent (43-for-95) from three-point range over their first six games -- tops in the nation -- but have managed to shoot just 34.0 percent (45-for-132) from long distance in the last seven games.
USF ranks fourth in the WCC in field goal percentage (45.3) and second in three-point field goal percentage (38.8).

The Dons opened the season by outrebounding its first five opponents by a margin of 11.4 per game but lost the battle of the boards in its next six games vs. St. John's (34-37), Pacific (25-36), Nevada (30-45), Holy Cross (34-41), San Diego State (25-34), Ole Miss (27-33).

From the Line
USF is shooting just 64.2 percent (179-for-279) from the foul line, which is the lowest percentage among WCC teams.
Cody Doolin ranks fourth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 86.0 percent (49-57) while the rest of the team is shooting 58.5 percent (130-for-222) from the line.
Defensive Doings

Against Pacific, the Dons trailed 61-59 with 1:23 left before the Tigers scored the last six points of the game to win 67-59. USF trailed Nevada by just six points at 51-45 with 4:14 remaining before falling 59-51. The Dons trailed Ole Miss 73-70 with 3:01 on the clock before dropping an 85-78 decision.
Dickerson Doubling Down
Cole Dickerson is averaging a double-double 13 games into the 2012-13 campaign, as the junior forward from Federal Way, Wash. is scoring 15.4 points and grabbing 11.9 rebounds per game.
Dickerson has posted seven double-doubles in 13 games this season against Stanford (11-19), Cal State-East Bay (14-15), Columbia (10-14), Montana (19-20), Holy Cross (17-17), San Diego State (15-12) and Dominican (30-10) and has narrowly missed double-doubles in games against Pacific (14-9), Nevada (11-9) and East Tennessee State (19-9).
The last USF player to average a double-double for an entire season was Darrell Tucker, when he scored 18.9 points and grabbed 10.1 rebounds a game in 2001-02.
Dickerson also posted double-doubles in both exhibition games against San Francisco State (21-15) and UNC-Pemboke (24-10).
Dickerson averaged 7.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 34 games last season, including one start.
