USF Looks for First WCC Win on Thursday vs. San Diego
After suffering two losses by a combined total of nine points last week, USF (7-8, 0-2 WCC) will look to get into the WCC win column for the first time this season when the Dons play host to the San Diego Toreros (8-8, 1-0 WCC) in Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-time is 7:00 p.m.
The Dons dropped its first two conference games last week, falling at Santa Clara, 74-69 and at home to BYU, 80-76. Both contests were two-point games with 30 seconds remaining.
The Toreros are coming off a 61-50 victory over Portland on Jan. 3 in their conference opener.

USF-San Diego Series
In a series that dates back to the 1979-80 season, USF leads the all-time series with San Diego, 35-33. The two teams have met seven times in WCC Tournament play, with San Diego holding a 5-2 edge.
USF has won the last six games against the Toreros, including both games last year (84-70 in San Francisco; 81-70 in San Diego). USF's current six-game winning streak follows a stretch in which the Toreros won five-straight head-to-head meetings. It also matches the Dons longest winning streak in the all-time series (1979-82).

Last Time Out: Takeaways From the BYU Game
  • Dropped a 80-76 decision to BYU Saturday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
  • Trailed by six points with 1:51 left only to rally and have two opportunities to either tie or win the game down the stretch.
  • Dons led by as many as 11 points in the first half and enjoyed a seven-point lead with 8:31 left before BYU seized control of the game with a 15-2 run.
  • Cole Dickerson and Cody Doolin each had 22 points...Doolin also added 10 assists.

Winning Ways
USF is 41-28 (.594) in their last 69 games following a 5-9 start to the 2010-11 season. USF has also made back-to-back postseason appearances under Rex Walters, competing in the CIT in 2010-11 and the CBI last season.
Last season, the Dons finished with an overall record of 20-14, marking the program's first 20-win season since 1981-82 (25-6).

Lineup Shuffle
Head coach Rex Walters employed his third starting lineup of the season on Saturday vs. BYU, as sophomore Chris Adams joined Cody Doolin, Cole Dickerson, Tim Derksen and Tao Xu in the starting five. De'End Parker, who started the first 14 games of the year, sat out the BYU game with an aggravated wrist.

Leaders in Their Field
Three USF players -- Cole Dickerson, Cody Doolin and De'End Parker -- rank in the top-25 nationally in various statistical categories.
Dickerson ranks fourth the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.7 boards a game, just behind Delaware's Jamelle Hagins (12.7), Siena's O.D. Anosike (12.5), and Colorado's Andre Roberson (12.1).
Doolin is averaging 6.5 assists per game to rank 15th among the national leaders.
Parker ranks 21st nationally in three-point field goal percentage, as the junior two-guard is shooting 51.3 percent (20-for-39) from beyond the arc after 14 games.

From the Field
USF is shooting 48.1 percent (160-for-332) from the field over the last six games, including a season-best 55.9 percent (33-for-59) vs. Dominican. The Dons are 5-2 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor, with its only losses in those seven games coming against Ole Miss (50.9) and BYU (50.0).
USF currently ranks third in the WCC in field goal percentage at 45.8 percent.

From Long Distance
USF nailed 11-of-24 three-pointers vs. BYU and is shooting 36.3 percent (56-for-154) from long distance over the last eight games. For the season, the Dons are shooting 39.6 percent from beyond the arc -- second best in the WCC.
The Dons have made nine or more three-pointers in five games this season, including the last two vs. Santa Clara (9-for-22) and BYU (11-of-24).

Board Work
USF has been outrebounded in each of the last two games vs. Santa Clara (33-42) and BYU (34-38) and have been outboarded in eight of the last 10 contests dating back to the St. John's game on Dec. 4.
The Dons rank eighth in the WCC in rebound average at 35.1 per game and seventh in rebound margin (+1.7).
The Dons opened the season by outrebounding its first five opponents by a margin of 11.4 per game but lost the battle of the boards in its next six games vs. St. John's (34-37), Pacific (25-36), Nevada (30-45), Holy Cross (34-41), San Diego State (25-34), Ole Miss (27-33).
The Dons are 6-1 in games in which they outrebound the opponent, with the only loss coming against Stanford, when the Dons held a 45-29 advantage on the boards.
Cole Dickerson ranks fourth in the nation in rebounding with a 11.7 per game average and accounts for 33.3 percent (176 of 527) of the team's rebounding total.

Charity Stripe Turnaround
USF is shooting 71.1 (64-for-90) percent from then line over the last five games after converting on just 61.1 (132-for-216) of its charity tries over the first 10 games of the year. However, the Dons still rank ninth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 64.1.
Cody Doolin ranks fourth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 84.6 percent (55-for-65) while the rest of the team is shooting 58.7 percent (141-for-240) from the line.

Defensive Doings
The Dons have allowed 80 points or more three times in its last six games, including a season-high 85 points to Ole Miss. For the season, USF is allowing 68.0 points a game, which ranks seventh among WCC teams. Opponents are shooting 43.4 percent from the floor, which is the highest percentage allowed in the conference. The Dons also rank last in the conference in blocks (1.5) and steals (4.9) per game.

In It to Win It
In five of USF's seven losses this season, the Dons have trailed by six points or less with at least 4:14 remaining in the game.
Against Pacific, the Dons trailed 61-59 with 1:23 left before the Tigers scored the last six points of the game to win 67-59. USF trailed Nevada by just six points at 51-45 with 4:14 remaining before falling 59-51. The Dons trailed Ole Miss 73-70 with 3:01 on the clock before dropping an 85-78 decision. USF trailed Santa Clara by two points at 69-67 with :31 left before falling 74-69. BYU led USF by one point at 77-76 before prevailing 80-76.

Dickerson's Doubles
Cole Dickerson is averaging a double-double 15 games into the 2012-13 campaign, as the junior forward from Federal Way, Wash. is scoring 15.9 points and grabbing 11.7 rebounds per game.
Dickerson has posted eight double-doubles in 15 games this season against Stanford (11-19), Cal State-East Bay (14-15), Columbia (10-14), Montana (19-20), Holy Cross (17-17), San Diego State (15-12), Dominican (30-10) and Santa Clara (17-12) and was a rebound away from double-doubles in four other games against Pacific (14-9), Nevada (11-9), East Tennessee State (19-9) and BYU (22-9).
The last USF player to average a double-double for an entire season was Darrell Tucker, when he scored 18.9 points and grabbed 10.1 rebounds a game in 2001-02.
Dickerson also posted double-doubles in both exhibition games against San Francisco State (21-15) and UNC-Pemboke (24-10).
Dickerson averaged 7.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 34 games last season, including one start.

Dickerson Takes Over Team Scoring Lead
Cole Dickerson has averaged 19.1 points over his last seven games (134) total, including a career-best 30-point effort vs. Dominican, and now leads the team in scoring with a 15.9 per game average - eighth best in the WCC.
Dickerson has scored in double-figures in all but one game (St. John's) this season and has scored 20 or more points in three contests (20 at American; 30 vs. Dominican; 22 vs. BYU).

Doolin Climbing USF's Career Assist Chart
Junior point guard Cody Doolin ranks second the WCC and 15th nationally in assists per game (6.5). Doolin's career assist total now stands at 347, which ranks sixth on USF's all-time list. He needs two more dimes to tie Jason Grimes (2000-05) for fourth all-time and three to tie LyRyan Russell (1997-02) for third place.

Dons Ironmen
USF and Loyola Marymount are the only team in the West Coast Conference to have three players ranked in the top 10 in minutes played. Cody Doolin is averaging 35.3 minutes per game, which ranks third among all conference players, while Cole Dickerson (34.7) and De'End Parker (32.4) rank fourth and ninth, respectively.

Debuts
Eight players have made their USF debuts this season, including freshmen Tim Derksen, Coltin Gelb, Matt Christiansen, Avry Holmes, Tao Xu and redshirt freshman Mark Tollefsen.
De'End Parker, who spent last year at UCLA and Frank Rogers, who played at Cabrillo College, have also made their USF debuts this season.

USF Impressive in Overtime Under Walters
USF boasts an 8-1 record in overtime games under head coach Rex Walters. The Dons only overtime loss came at Colorado State, 91-75 in the 2009-10 season.

Staff Changes
Head coach Rex Walters has announced Brent Crews has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach. Michael Lee will assume the title of special assistant to the head coach.
