SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
The University of San Francisco baseball team continued its slow start to the 2013 season, dropping a 6-1 decision to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium Friday.

The Dons fell behind early as starting pitcher Abe Bobb gave up three runs in the first on three hits and a walk, including back-to-back triples by the Gauchos number-three and four hitters.

Bobb was pulled after pitching three-plus innings and allowing five earned runs.

Bob Mott relieved Bobb, and threw four innings of one-run ball, surrendering only a solo home run in the fourth.

After being shutout for the first eight innings, the Dons rallied for a run in the ninth when Mitchell Rowan drove in Zachary Turner for the lone USF run.

Turner continued his hot hitting, going 4-4 with a run scored.

"Zach was great for us again today," said Nino Giarratano. "We need to get some runners on base to take advantage of those hits, and we need to pitch much better to be successful at the Division-I level. Our plan for tomorrow is simple. We need good outings from Alex Balog and Sheldon Lee, solid defense, and we need to put some runs on the board."

The Dons are back in action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against UCSB. First pitch is at 11 a.m. with the second game is scheduled to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
