SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The tenacity of the San Francisco Dons came through this weekend, as the team took the final game of their San Diego trip with an 8-2 victory over San Diego State. After taking two out of three from WCC-rival San Diego (22-22) in a series that ended Sunday, the Dons (25-19, 11-7 WCC) took sole place of second place in a playoff race with six legitimate teams vying for four postseason bids.
Abe Bobb earned his third win of the season, allowing just one earned run and pitching into the sixth inning. Senior
Andrew Pulido earned a save, going 3.2 innings without allowing a hit and walking one.
Offensive catalyst
Justin Maffei got the Dons started early manufacturing a run with a walk, stolen base, wild pitch and groundout in the top of the first. Maffei scored again in the third, singling before being driven in on
Bradley Zimmer's RBI triple, and a final time in the fourth to give USF an 8-0 lead. Zimmer and
Bob Cruikshank each drove in two runs.
“This weekend says a lot about the character and leadership of this team,” said USF head coach
Nino Giarratano. “The seniors have done a great job keeping things going in the right direction. We've won 18 games on the road this season, I don't know if anyone in the country has won more. Our pitching and top of the order were both very good tonight, and that's a good combination to have.”
The Dons host the San Jose Spartans tomorrow at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Inside the Numbers
Zachary Turner extended his hit-streak to 15 with a single, the longest stretch on the team this season.
