SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons dropped a heartbreaker last weekend but look to rebound and get back into the West Coast Conference race as they host East Bay rival Saint Mary's in the opener of a double header on Sunday afternoon.
Â
San Francisco has dropped back-to-back games but has been to now-No. 7 Pepperdine and Santa Clara, perennial WCC powers, and both have been decided late in games.
Â
LAST TIME OUTThe Dons went into the weekend having only earned one point in the entire series against Santa Clara and nearly earned another on Sunday as they played 108 minutes of shutout soccer before the Broncos broke through and got a double overtime goal to give them the 1-0 win on Sunday.
Â
SCHIFFEL ON VERGE OF HISTORYMadalyn Schiffel has recorded 13 solo shutouts in her first two and a half seasons with the Dons and is now one short of tying the school record of 14, which was set by Amy Voiland (1994-98). Schiffel has twice participated with Team USA camps.
Â
RETURN HOMEThe Dons were on a five-game road trip from Sept. 19 to Oct. 5 and had a stretch of eight of nine away from home but now will play most of the final stretch of the season at Negoesco Stadium. San Francisco will play four of their final six matches at home, including the final three of the season.
Â
DOUBLE HEADER SUNDAYSunday's match against Saint Mary's will be the opener of a double header, which will wrap up with the men's soccer team playing host to Gonzaga at 2:30 p.m.
Â
CONFERENCE PLAY CONTINUESThe Dons sit two wins behind Pepperdine, BYU and Gonzaga and are seven points behind Pepperdine for first in the conference. There are only four conference matches this weekend, with Portland and Gonzaga remaining idle.
Â
TORRES' RETURNJunior defender
Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they competed in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Despite wins over Argentina and Bolivia, Chile was unable to get out of group play and into the final round. She missed five matches and the Dons went 2-2-1 in her absence.

SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTONThe Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under
Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sept. 7. After a
Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.
Â
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIEMadalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.
Â
ABOUT SAINT MARY'SThe Gaels are coming off a weekend where they played both Loyola Marymount and No. 8 Pepperdine to ties, including holding the first place Waves scoreless. Saint Mary's has scored 22 goals on the season with eight coming from Samantha Dion. Goalkeeper Stephanie Busch made her first two starts of the season over the weekend and allowed two goals over the last 220 minutes.
