Battle in the Bay Classic
Thursday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 12
California Tennis Club | San Francisco
USF men's tennis team takes to the court for the sixth iteration of the Battle in the Bay Classic, hosting some of the nation's top competition. Play will take place at the historic California Tennis Club.
The 2014 invitational tournament will feature some of the best college players from the Pac-12 Conference, WCC and Mountain West Conference. Players from Cal, Pepperdine, UCLA, Stanford, USC, USF and other top NCAA Division 1 tennis programs will be facing off in a tournament format to see who will hold the title as the best singles and doubles players to compete in the Bay Area this year.
"We are really excited to have many young and strong college players who will be earning their college rankings later this year," said head coach Pires de Almeida. "Our seeds are all ranked in the country in the top 125 in singles and the doubles seeds are very strong new teams that will impact the national selection of doubles teams during the season for sure."
Play will commence Friday morning at 9 a.m., in the first round doubles draw, with singles action to follow. Tennis is slated to continue throughout the weekend, with finals matches taking place on Sunday, Oct. 12. Results will be posted when available on usfdons.com and battleinthebayclassic.com.
The Battle in the Bay Tennis Classic was formed by USF's Director of Tennis, Peter Bartlett, Head Men's Tennis Coach, Pablo Pires de Almeida, and the California Tennis Club Director of Tennis, Steve Jackson.
"We are in our sixth year with the Battle in the Bay Classic tournament and the field has gotten better each year," said Bartlett. "We started the tournament with the mindset of creating something different from the average college tournament. It's run much more like a professional tournament than a collegiate one. The Battle in the Bay Classic has really become the showcase college tennis event for the best college programs on the west coast and we are proud of that fact. This season's tournament won't disappoint if you're a college tennis fan."
Last season the duo Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa earned the doubles tournament crown and will be working towards claiming the title again. Saraiva and Skajaa will be defending their title against top doubles contenders such as No. 7 Gregory Bayane and Andre Goransson of California, Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton of Boise State, and Filip Bergevi and Billy Griffith of California. Also competing in doubles play for USF are Thomas Takemoto and Vasco Valverde. They are a new team looking to gain experience playing together for the spring season.
In singles play, Saraiva, Skajaa, Valverde and Johan Samuelsson will be competing for the Green and Gold. Top contenders for the main singles draw include Thomas Tenreiro of Boise State who advanced to the semifinals last season in the tournament, along with Filip Bergevi and Andre Goransson of California.
"Our guys will have a great opportunity to win the singles and doubles at this event. This has really become one of the nations top fall tournaments," said Pires de Almeida.
Along with the collegiate tennis to be played, schedule of events include a Sponsor/Player Pro-Am, cocktail reception, Kids Day, and exhibition matches
"We have such great support from the California Tennis Club and their members. We have some great sponsors who without them we really couldn't produce the tournament at this level," said Bartlett.
Admission is free and open to the public during weekend's tennis action, and fans are encouraged to attend and support the Dons and their flagship event. However, if you are not a CTC Member, please park outside the club and check in at the front desk.
