SAN FRANCISCO – Unscathed through the opening trio of games, the San Francisco women's basketball team eased to an 85-42 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Tuesday night at War Memorial Gym.
For the Dons, the 3-0 start to the season is the first since the 1983-84 season, and just the fourth in program history (since 1976-77). The Dons were paced by a 22-point outing from junior
Taylor Proctor. She was joined in double-digit scoring by two Dons,
Taj Winston and
Michaela Rakova – who each finished with 10 points. Three women grabbed a game-high six rebounds in the contest –
Zhane Dikes,
Paige Spietz and
Alicia Scafidi.
All told, the Dons played 14 women in the game, and every available roster player picked up at least four minutes of action. The deep bench is something that Winston, a senior guard for the Dons, is excited to see come to fruition.
"Everybody gets a chance to come in the game and play, and everybody has a chance to come in and contribute," said Winston. "We have a deep bench, so it's really good for the ones that start, it's good for the ones that come off the bench that they can contribute, it's exciting that everyone gets to play.
"I like the way the team is coming together a lot. I like that we are pretty much able to execute the game plan that we put together before the games and in practice. That's something that we've really emphasized every day in practice – being able to come out and execute the game plan from the get-go."
Defensively, USF forced 21 Otter turnovers, which led to 29 points. After shooting 38.5 percent in the first half, the Dons wore down the visitors, holding them to 12.5 percent shooting in the second. Winston led the team with four steals, and Proctor took two charges for the Dons.
After a quiet start to the contest, the Dons went on a 9-2 run capped by a layup from Rakova put the score at 28-17 with 8:53 to play in the first half. An offensive rebound and putback by Winston, and a three-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock capped the half with the Dons up 41-26 at the break.
The coming out of halftime, the Dons were clicking. Proctor scored the basket and ensuing free throw. After a missed layup attempt by Mykayla Harris, Dikes dished to Proctor for the layup. After yet another missed shot attempt by the Otters,
Claudia Price scored in the paint, assisted by
Rachel Howard. Then, Winston sunk a pair from the line to set the score at 50-26 and break the game open.
USF continued to extend the advantage, and saw its lead balloon to 39 points after
Tiara Tucker weaved through the lane for the score with 1:37 to play. USF's defense held the Otters without a basket from the floor for the final5:49 of the game, with Cal State Monterey Bay's only points coming from the line.
The last time back-to-back opponents were held under 50 points was during the 1996-97 campaign when the Dons claimed their third-straight WCC tournament title to earn three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championships.
Next, the Dons head to Cal State Riverside for its first road test of the season. The Dons and the Highlanders tip off Saturday at 2 p.m.
