SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons scored four goals over the weekend and look to finish the season strong as they wrap up the 2014 campaign against Pacific on Saturday for Senior Day.
Â
SENIOR DAYIt will mark the final matches for the team's four seniors:
Mackenzie Krieser,
Abigail Phillips,
Jaciara Mello and
Celia Pellegrini. The trio of Krieser, Mello and Phillips has been the anchor for a new era of Dons soccer. Mello has started every game in her four-year career. Phillips has started in all but three matches since 2011. Krieser, who scored nine goals her sophomore season, is eighth on the team's all-time list in points and sixth in goals scored.
Â
STARTING WITH CONSISTENCYOver the last four years, two players have remained healthy and the model of consistency and they are seniors
Jaciara Mello and
Abigail Phillips. Mello and Phillips have started in 78 and 74 games respectively in their four years with the Dons and this puts the pair in rare company. With the 78 starts, Mello is tied with Chelsea Hunt (2003-06) for the most starts in team history. Phillips sits in eighth on the team's all-time list. The pair also holds the record for the most games started by teammates.
Â
LAST TIME OUTThe Dons had two chances to pick up wins and let them slip away against Portland and Gonzaga. San Francisco traded goals with Portland on Friday but was unable to get over the top and settled for the 2-2 tie. It was only the second time in team history the Dons had earned a point against the Pilots. USF came out firing on Sunday and took a quick 2-0 lead, behind goals from
Sydnie Telson and
Alex Alugas, but Gonzaga scored three unanswered goals to take the contest 3-2.
Â
TELSON ON FIREJunior
Sydnie Telson had quite the weekend. The scored the first goal in each of the Dons' matches this weekend on headers delivered by
Amanda Whittle. It was the first time she had goals in back-to-back games in her career and is now tied for the team lead in goals with three.
Â
SCHIFFEL ON VERGE OF HISTORYMadalyn Schiffel picked up her 14th career solo shutout on Sunday and is now one short of breaking the school record, which was set by Amy Voiland (1994-98). Schiffel has twice participated with Team USA camps.
Â
#DONSTAKEBARCAThe Dons are looking to take the trip of a lifetime as they prepare to travel to Barcelona in March. On this trip, they will become immersed in the Spanish culture and compete with teams abroad. Representing USF abroad, not only as a member of the women's soccer team, but as a student, is an honor. It is an amazing opportunity and they look to represent the University in the best way. The team is accepting donations
here.
Â
TORRES' RETURNJunior defender
Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they competed in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Despite wins over Argentina and Bolivia, Chile was unable to get out of group play and into the final round. She missed five matches and the Dons went 2-2-1 in her absence.

SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTONThe Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under
Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sept. 7. After a
Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.
Â
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIEMadalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.
Â
ABOUT PACIFICPacific has had a rough season in 2014. The Tigers are currently on an eight-game losing streak and have not won a match since Sept. 5. Pacific has allowed 43 goals (2.33 per game) while only scoring six times. USF and Pacific tied their match up 1-1 last season with the lone USF goal coming from
Alex Alugas.
