SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Francisco women's tennis team opened up with the first point of the afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center before succumbing to the San Diego Toreros 4-3 Tuesday afternoon.
The West Coast Conference doubles team of the week,
Andrea Ka and
Marina Nikolic, opened the match with a decisive 8-2 win. The victory was the duo's eighth in a row and their team-best 14th notch in the win column in the dual match season. Ka and Nikolic are now a perfect 5-0 in WCC action.
After San Diego tied up the battle for the first point of the day, USF's No. 3 doubles team of
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and
Genevieve McCloskey secured the point with a hard-fought 8-7(5) win.
The Toreros knotted the match as singles play began and edged to a 2-1 lead after Colomba DiFillipo handed Nikolic just her fifth loss of the spring.
Thyra Taune, a freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, evened the score after taking her match with Marta Stojanovic 7-5, 6-2 from the No. 2 position.
San Diego nabbed the next two points to clinch the match before
Andrea Ka, a junior from Paris, France, posted a comeback win from the No. 1 spot to make the final score 4-3 in favor of the Toreros.
USF now stands at 11-7 on the season, and 1-5 in WCC play, while San Diego improves to 8-9 (4-3 WCC).
Next, the Dons will tussle with No. 75 San Diego State Wednesday at 2 p.m.
