SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Complete with Andrea Ka's decisive victory over a ranked opponent, the San Francisco women's tennis team took down 75th-ranked San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center on Wednesday.
With the victory, the Dons improve to 12-7 on the season as San Diego State drops to 9-11. With the victory in its last non-conference match of the season, USF will finish the year with an 11-2 record outside league play.
San Diego state opened the afternoon with a win at No. 3 doubles, but the Dons raced back with back-to-back 8-4 decisions to take the first point of the day. For West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week, Marina Nikolic and Andrea Ka, the victory over Hailey Johnson and Dora Somoracz marks the duo's impressive ninth in a row.
After USF earned the opening point, Ka got to work on No. 44 Laura Antonana Iriarte, Mountain West Player of the Week. Ka, a sophomore from Paris, France, quickly dispatched Antonana Iriarte, 6-1, 6-4, to pick up her first win over a ranked foe.
The Dons widened the lead as Thyra Taune nabbed a straight-set victory over Kristin Buth, 6-3, 6-4, to push the Aztecs to the brink. After San Diego State earned the point from the No. 6 slot, Milica Hadzi-Tanovic downed Dora Somoracz, 6-1, 6-2, to clinch the match victory. The Aztecs would rally back in the final two matches of the day to set the final score at 4-3 in favor of the Green and Gold.
USF is now on tap to host its last two home matches of the regular season. First, the Dons will tangle with Portland at The Olympic Club Friday at 10 a.m.
