Dons Overwhelm Stanislaus State
11/7/2015 5:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's basketball team wasted no time in showing its deeper, longer and stronger bench as the Dons wore down Stanislaus State in a 93-50 exhibition win on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym.
The Dons enjoyed double-digit performances from four women, headlined by sharpshooter Anna Seilund. The sophomore from Copenhagen, Denmark, went 6-of-8 from 3-point range to finish with a game-high 20 points. Senior Taylor Proctor, a 2015-16 Preseason All-WCC selection, finished with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, and junior Rachel Howard added 13 points in the victorious effort.
Newcomer Raushan Gultekin, a junior transfer from Salt Lake Community College, finished with 10 points and a game-high four steals in her debut for the Green and Gold. The Dons played 12 women in the game and everyone finished with at least one rebound, and 11 of the 12 scored at least two points.
(11/7/2015) Women's Basketball vs. Stanislaus State
The contest started quietly, but midway through the first period of play, USF rolled off nine unanswered to build a double-digit advantage. The run was capped by a feed from Gultekin to an unguarded Seilund on the left wing for the three to make with 18-8 with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter.
Howard helped USF grow the lead to 11 after forcing Ana Burch into committing a turnover and streaking the length of the court for the layup to put the score at 29-18 with 6:20 to play in the half.
However, the Warriors battled back to cut the lead to five after a six-point swing of their own, punctuated by a layup for Riley Holladay to move the score to 29-24. USF finished the second quarter strong to own the 38-29 lead heading into the halftime break, and the third started with gusto and an 8-0 run. Back-to-back swishes from long range off the hand of Kalyn Simon were followed by a layup for Proctor put the score at 50-33 with 6:30 to play in the third.
The Dons continued to put the pressure on Stanislaus State as the Warriors stalled at 38 points for nearly six minutes of the action. During the span, the Dons' defense forced 11 turnovers and the visitors missed each of its three attempts from the field. Concurrently, the USF offense was firing on all cylinders as the team nearly doubled its opponents on the scoreboard. Six women scored points in the spurt and a freshman Zayn Dornstauder's layup in the paint put the score at 75-38 with 7:15 remaining in the contest.
The Dons cruised to the 93-50 victory with four newcomers and team captain Simon on the floor in the closing minutes. USF shot 42.4 percent from the floor, and finished with 10 three-pointers in the contest on 50 percent shooting from distance. USF's defense forced the Warriors into 28 turnovers on the night, and the Dons finished with 41 points off the Stanislaus State miscues.
Coming off one of its best seasons since the turn of the millennium, USF is hungry to make back-to-back postseason appearances after playing in the WCC championship game and earning a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament field a year ago.
USF opens the 2015-16 campaign in earnest Friday night, on the road against North Texas. The Dons and the Mean Green are slated to tip at 3 p.m. PT. USF then returns to War Memorial Gym for its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The Dons will celebrate the 2014-15 WNIT squad, with commemorative rally towels to the first 300 fans.
