SAN JOSE, Calif. - Samantha Jehnings posted her first career multi-goal game as she netted a pair of goals that helped propel the USF women's soccer team (6-1-2) to a 3-1 victory at San Jose State on Tuesday evening. Jehnings scored her third goal in the past two contests. Sydnie Telson added her first goal of the season to help cement the victory.
Jehnings is the first Don to score multiple goals in a game since Mackenzie Krieser scored two in a 4-1 win over Sacramento State on Aug. 31, 2012.
"Samantha Jehnings played a terrific game for us," said head coach Jim Millinder. "Coming off the bench the way she did, she had a great game. We really weren't that great the first 45 minutes, but in the second half we really picked it up and played the brand of soccer we want to play. It was a good result for us today."
San Jose State (2-3-2) actually got on the board first when Darlene Rodriguez scored off a rebound from a blocked shot in the 25th minute to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Jehnings notched the equalizer five minutes later when she took advantage of a San Jose State turnover in their defensive third and scored against the unsettled defense, tying the match at 1-1.
That characterized a very evenly matched first half that saw San Jose State hold just a slight 7-6 advantage in shots in the period.
In the 66th minute, Jehnings broke the stalemate with her second score of the match, a one-touch goal off a rebound in the box that turned out to be the game winner.
Telson then provided the insurance in the 75th minute when she redirected Amanda Whittle's corner kick into a line drive header into the back of the net to give the Dons their ultimate 3-1 advantage.
Both sides delivered 11 shots overall on the night, but the Dons had six shots on frame, while San Jose State only had four. USF held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Alex Alugas helped out the USF offense with three shots, including one shot on goal, while Rochelle Weerackoon fired off a pair of shots, one on frame.
Madalyn Schiffel collected three saves in goal for the Dons.
USF has a few days to prepare for a big test when they host No. 13 California at Negoesco Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m.
