SAN FRANCISCO - The USF women's soccer team was shutout by No. 13 Cal on Friday evening at Negoesco Stadium, snapping a five-match unbeaten streak for the Dons.
The match started out very evenly-contested for the first 15 minutes, but Cal (6-1-1) gradually started to take control in their attacking third of the pitch, putting up the first goal in the 29th minute after Miranda Nild received a pass in the box from Heather Walleigh, who had dribbled through the middle into the box. Nild had a one-on-one with USF keeper Madalyn Schiffel from that point and slipped a shot from about 10 yards out underneath Schiffel's glove to put the Bears up 1-0.
Cal kept the pressure on USF (6-2-2) on the defensive end as well, not allowing the Dons to string much momentum together. USF was only allowed to take two shots in the first half, but the Dons' defense tried to do their part to stem the Cal tide. Ali Schaffer and Leticia Torres helped diffuse a number of Cal chances with smothering defense.
The Dons kept the score at 1-0 while advancing into the Cal defensive third more frequently in the second half. In the 60th minute, Sonja Giraud delivered a beautiful pass to Samantha Jehnings, who fired off a shot from straight on about 15 yards out that sailed just high over the crossbar.
Six minutes later, Giraud, Jehnings, and Alex Alugas had a counter attack that saw them facing a 3-on-2 where Giraud took a hard right-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box that looked destined for the upper right corner of the net, but it was narrowly swatted away as Cal keeper Emily Boyd had to get fully extended to make the save and preserve the 1-0 Cal lead.
The Bears were able to add an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Samantha Witteman dribbled down the right wing and weaved through the USF defense where she found a small opening to slip a pass to Arielle Ship right in front of the net, allowing Ship to punch in the score from inside the six-yard box and give Cal their final 2-0 advantage.
The second half proved to be much more even in terms of shots taken, as Cal held just a 6-4 edge in that period, but a 20-6 advantage overall.
Despite being tested all night, Schiffel only needed to record three saves in the contest.
Halle Bissin had one of the two USF shots on goal when her header was speared by Boyd in the second half.
The Dons return to the pitch on Sunday when they host Boise State at 1 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium in their final nonconference match of the season.
