Turnovers Turned Score at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Francisco women's basketball team couldn't hold onto the rock from the Leavey Center, as turnovers proved to be their demise in the 68-57 loss at Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.

The Dons committed a season-high 30 miscues on the day, leading to 26 points for the Broncos. The last 30-turnover game for the Dons occurred more than three years ago when USF faltered 34 times at Sacramento State on Nov. 28, 2012. With the win, Santa Clara improves to 15-5 (6-3 WCC) on the year, while USF moves to 12-8 (3-6 WCC).

USF was led by a 15-point outing for sophomore Anna Seilund, who swished four 3-pointers and went 3-for-4 from the line. Zhane Dikes added 10 points and six rebounds and USF's only other double-digit scorer on the day. Taylor Proctor finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Dons, halting a 25-game streak of double-digit scoring for the senior from Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Dons opened the contest hot-handed as Proctor dished to Claudia Price for the reverse layup to put the score at 11-5 with 4:34 to play in the first quarter. Despite USF's 42 percent shooting, seven turnovers in the first quarter set the tone for the day. By the end of the period, Santa Clara was shooting just 21 percent from the field, with five of its points coming from the free throw line.

USF continued to own the lead for the next six minutes of action, but Taylor Berry's layup with 3:32 remaining in the half gave the Broncos their first advantage in the contest with the score at 19-18. Both squads closed the half at the free throw line, six of the last eight points of the period coming from the stripe.

The Dons held the one-point lead at the break, and opened the third with a layup for Proctor off the pass from Rakova. USF and Santa Clara continued to trade baskets for much of the third. A triple for Seilund gave USF the 44-41 lead, but a successful trip to the line for Devin Hudson again made it a one-point game heading into the final 10 minutes.

USF opened the period with a three for Dikes, but the lead was quickly erased after a 10-0 run for the Broncos. During the three-minute span, the Dons committed three turnovers and Santa Clara raced to the 53-47 lead with 6:51 remaining. After an assisted three for Seilund sliced the lead back to five, the Broncos went on an 11-2 run with back-to-back-to-back baskets for Savanna Hanson.

The Dons outshot the Broncos 42 to 36 percent, and both squads hit 50 percent of its attempts from the field in the second half. Santa Clara finished with the 41-36 advantage on the glass, but the turnovers proved to be the difference in the contest.

Next up, the Dons host Portland on Girl Scout Day at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. Tipoff for USF and the Pilots is slated for Thursday at 7 p.m.
