SAN FRANCISCO – Playing the first West Coast Conference overtime game of the season, the San Francisco women's basketball team took San Diego to the wire, before falling 67-58 on Thursday night.
The Dons (10-6, 1-4 WCC) and the Toreros (13-3, 3-1) were locked in a back and forth battle for much of the game before San Diego managed to pull away in the bonus period, outscoring USF 13-4 in the extra five minutes from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
The senior duo of
Taylor Proctor and
Zhane Dikes yet again led the Dons, combining for 67 percent of the USF offensive output. Proctor finished with her sixth double-double of the season after netting 22 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Running the point, Dikes added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Rachel Howard chipped in 11 points and
Michaela Rakova contributed 10 rebounds for the Green and Gold in the overtime decision.
USF dug themselves and early hole in the contest, falling behind 16-6 after San Diego put together a 12-0 run while the Dons committed four turnovers and missed eight straight attempts from the field. By the end of the period USF was down 16-8 to the visitors, but the Dons quickly waged a comeback as the second quarter got underway.
Proctor started the scoring in the period after Rakova's pass to the paint resulted in the successful and-1 opportunity. After Dikes added two free throws and Howard's layup found the bottom of the twine, the Dons were down 16-15. USF continued to score at will while forcing the Toreros into seven second-quarter turnovers. A string of six unanswered points stretched to a 13-4 run after Proctor's 3-pointer made it 28-22 in favor of USF with 58 seconds remaining in the half.
The Dons went into the break up three, and extended the advantage to five after Dikes scooped up the steal and Howard got the friendly roll on the first possession of the period.
Then the see-saw started to rock as San Diego took a 36-34 lead after Maya Hood's layup with 3:30 to play in the third. USF answered with baskets in the paint by Proctor and Dikes and the Dons led 37-36 after Zhane capitalized on another and-1 try. By the end of the third, the Dons clung to the 41-39 lead, and the home team led 46-41 with 6:10 to play in regulation.
San Diego battled back to cut the lead to 46-43 after the Toreros broke the USF press to score the layup for Malina Hood. After a USF turnover and ensuing Dons foul San Diego pulled within one, and on the next possession Maya gave the visitors the one point advantage with 5:02 to go.
The remainder of the fourth was a back-and-forth battle of wills. Proctor's layup with 23.5 seconds on the clock gave the Dons a 54-52 lead, and San Diego head coach Cindy Fisher called a timeout to set up the play. Cori Woodward knotted the score with 12.4 seconds to play and went to the line for the potential to give the Toreros the lead. After missing the free throw, San Diego came up with the rebound, but the Dons' defense held strong as the game was extended to overtime.
In the extra period, both teams exchanged points as the game was tied at 58 apiece with 3:35 remaining. After Dikes earned her final trip to the line and missed the pair, the Dons never scored again as San Diego finished with the final nine points of the night to come away with the 67-58 victory.
Despite shooting 22 percent in the first quarter, the Dons finished with the 39 to 36.9 percent advantage, and the 41-40 rebounding edge. Neither squad could find their stride from beyond the arc, as the teams combined to go 4-for-29 from distance in the contest. Both Hood sisters finished with double-doubles, as Malina led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds, with seven of her points coming from the free throw line.
Next, USF takes on BYU in a rematch of the 2015 WCC Championship Finals. The Dons and the Cougars tip on Saturday at 2 p.m.
