USF will put its unbeaten home record on the line this weekend when the Dons play host to Portland and Gonzaga at Negoesco Stadium. Friday's match against the Pilots gets underway at 7:00 p.m. while Sunday's match against the Zags kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
Â
The Dons (6-10, 2-4 WCC) are coming off a pair of narrow road losses last weekend at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine, but take solace in returning to their home pitch where the team has won all five of its matches this season.
Â
If the Dons are to remain unbeaten at home, they will have to accomplish something that has never been done before: defeat the Portland Pilots. Portland (8-5-3, 2-3-1 WCC) holds a 22-0-2 advantage in the head-to-head meetings with USF and denied the Dons the WCC Championship last season with a 1-0 victory at Merlo Field. The Dons have managed to score just three goals in the last 15 matches against the Pilots, notching ties in 2014 (2-2) and 2006 (1-1).
Â
The timing might be right for USF, as the Pilots are stinging after suffering a 3-0 home loss to Saint Mary's last Sunday. All three of the Gaels' goals came after intermission. Portland ranks as the WCC's fourth-highest scoring team with 25 goals on the year and have a +8 goal differential. Junior Hannah Boston-Griffiths paces the Pilots with eight goals, third-best in the WCC. Rachel Lusby has taken over the net minding duties and sports a 0.54 goals against average in her six matches between the pipes.
Â
The Dons have scored five goals in their last four matches and are led by senior
Amanda Whittle and junior
Sonja Giraud who are tied for the team-lead in goals scored with five apiece. Whittle has added five assists and is tied for sixth in the WCC in points with 15.
Â
USF will wrap up the weekend with a home match against Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon. The Zags will take a 6-7-2 overall record and a 2-4-0 WCC mark into Friday night's match at Santa Clara. The Dons hold a 16-7-0 lead in the all-time series and turned back the Zags, 3-2 last year in Spokane on Giraud's game-winner in the 71st minute.
Samantha Jehnings and
Camille Wilson also got into the scoring column for the Dons.
Â
USF will close out its season next Saturday with a home match against Santa Clara. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. USF's seniors will be honored prior to the game.
