SAN FRANCISCO – Tomorrow's turkey will taste all that much better for USF after Wednesday night's 79-67 victory over visiting Troy.
Ronnie Boyce notched his second consecutive double-double, scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-best seven assists. Freshmen
Charles Minlend and
Jordan Ratinho came off the bench to score 11 each while
Nate Renfro turned in a solid stat line with nine points, nine rebounds and six assists. Ratinho made 4-of-5 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from distance, while Minlend drilled 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc.
The Dons also shot a season-best 51.9 percent from the field and canned 12-of-28 three-pointers. USF also had the better of it on the boards, 36-28.
Wesley Person led three Troy players in double figures with 24 points, 15 of which came from beyond the three-point line.
The Dons were in control for much of the game but could not pull away from Troy until late in the game. USF took a 36-30 lead at intermission and built an 11-point lead at 69-58 with 4:26 left in the game after a lay-up by freshman
Jimbo Lull.
The Trojans made things a little uncomfortable for the Dons down the stretch, as Troy cut the lead to six at 70-64 with 2:43 remaining. A pair of free throws by
Chase Foster followed by Boyce's fourth three-pointer of the night boosted the Dons lead back to 11 at 75-64 with 1:03 remaining.Â
After a Person three-pointer made it 75-67 with :51 left, free throws by Foster and Boyce accounted for the 79-67 victory as the Dons improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
"We weren't perfect by any means but we were efficient in a lot of areas," said USF head coach
Kyle Smith after the game. "Ronnie (Boyce) got in a really good rhythm early on and was three assists shy of a triple-double. He is playing with a lot of confidence and maturity.
"Renfro, Ratinho and Minlend gave us really solid minutes. They are our future and it's nice to see them contribute early on."
USF will return to action on Saturday afternoon when the Dons meet Sacramento State in Cheney, Wash. as part of Eastern Washington's tournament. USF will face the host Eagles on Sunday evening before returning to the Bay Area.
