USF Cruises Past Abilene Christian, 86-51

SAN FRANCISCO – USF played perhaps its most complete game of the season tonight against visiting Abilene Christian and was rewarded with an 86-51 victory.
Four Dons scored in double figures, led by a pair of 16-point games by Ronnie Boyce and Charles Minlend, who was celebrating his 19th birthday. Sophomore Matt McCarthy added 11 and Chase Foster finished with 10. USF's reserves accounted for 58 of the team's 86 points for the game.
The Dons, which came into the game ranked seventh nationally in three-pointers made per game, did nothing to lose their grip among the nation's top shooting teams. USF drilled 15-of-30 three-pointers, with Minlend knocking down four and Boyce three. With its performance tonight, USF (8-2) is now shooting a WCC-best 41.8 percent from beyond the arc.
USF also held a commanding edge on the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats, 49-33. Nate Renfro pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds on the night, while McCarthy and Jimbo Lull each grabbed seven.
Abilene Christian (6-5) was led in scoring by Jaylen Franklin, who finished with 15 points while Hayden Howell added 14. The Wildcats shot 33.8 percent from the field on the night.
USF's win was nearly in wire-to-wire fashion, as the Dons trailed just once in the game at 2-0 before running off 12 straight points to open a 12-2 lead. The Wildcats cut the lead to 12-8 but a 17-2 run boosted the USF lead to 29-10 with 7:42 remaining in the first half.
The Dons took a 45-23 lead into intermission and the Wildcats weren't able to get closer than 20 points in the second half as USF coasted to the 35-point victory. The 35-point margin of victory was the Dons largest of the season.
"We got a lot of good minutes out of a lot of players tonight," said USF head coach Kyle Smith. "We didn't have any dips tonight and played pretty efficiently for 40 minutes. We shot the ball really well tonight from distance. Anytime you make 15 three's you are going to have a pretty good chance of winning the game."
USF will fly to Honolulu tomorrow to take part in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, where the Dons will take on Utah in a first round matchup on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. PT and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
