USF Falls to Pacific in WCC Opener

Stockton, Calif. –– In its first West Coast Conference match of the 2016, the USF Dons struggled against Pacific and lost 4-0 to the Tigers in Stockton on Saturday afternoon.
In the first doubles match, Andrea Ka paired up with Genevieve McCloskey and earned the 6-1 win over Maayan Sela and Yuki Asami. However, the Tigers came back to win the remaining doubles matches and clinch the point. Thyra Taune and Hanna Börjeson fought hard against Viktoriya Dzyuba and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz, but Pacific earned the 6-3 win. In the final doubles match, Shanna Dos Santos and Alisha Sharma fell just short against Katie Dyson and Anneroos Nederstigt, losing 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Pacific continued the momentum in singles play, as Sabrina Rodriguez beat Sharma, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. The Tigers continued to add to its lead with Dzyuba handing Ka her first singles loss of the 2016 season, beating the Don 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 1 match. Pacific then clinched the overall win with Sela taking down Börjeson 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3.
The Dons will return on Feb. 21 at UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m.
