SAN FRANCISCO – USF stepped out of West Coast Conference play on Tuesday night and defeated the Menlo College Oaks, 100-68 inside War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
The game had a November feel to it and gave some veterans the chance to get back in sync heading into Saturday's showdown with Santa Clara. The Dons' coaching staff also had the opportunity to take a longer look at some younger players perform in game conditions late in the season.
Tim Derksen scored a game high 26 points, one shy of his career high, Devin Watson added 20 while Chase Foster and freshman Marquill Smith chipped in with 10. Derksen, who also grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, made 11-of-15 of his shots from the floor. Watson nailed four 3-pointers in leading the Dons to the wire-to-wire 32-point victory.
Ryan Wilson was the only Menlo player in double figures with 19 points. The Oaks made 11-of-28 three-pointers, including four by Wilson.
The Dons shot 51.4 percent from the field for the game and made 10-of-22 three-point attempts. USF also held a commanding edge on the boards, outrebounding the Oaks, 52-28.
"I thought Devin and Tim were outstanding tonight, especially with their efficiency and how hard they played," said USF head coach Rex Walters. "Defensively we did some good things but our close outs still have to be a lot harder on the three-ball."
USF opened its first double digit lead of the game at the 14:54 mark of the first half, as a Watson lay-in gave the Dons a 15-4 lead. The Dons built has much as a 26 point lead in the first half at 42-16 with 7:08 remaining before taking a 52-34 lead into intermission.
Derksen scored 22 of his 26 points in the first half on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor.
The Dons grew their lead to 30 points at 87-57 with 6:05 remaining and coasted to the 32-point victory.
Smith, a freshman from Miami, Fla., showed his tremendous upside over his 17-minute playing stint which yielded a career high 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor and five rebounds. His final points came on a resounding one-handed slam following a steal, which gave USF its 100th point of the night.
"It was really good for Marquill to get some minutes and he played really well," said Walters. "He is very talented and still needs to adjust to the intensity of the game on this level but he is getting better and better with each practice."
Stokley Chaffee, a freshman from Amador Valley High School, got into the scoring column with three points, all coming from the foul line. He also had a blocked shot towards the end of the game.
USF will resume WCC play on Saturday night when the Dons play host to longtime rival Santa Clara beginning at 8:00 p.m.
