Between the Baselines
The collaborative nature of the USF offense has been a focus point on the season, and Dons rank second in the league and 45th in NCAA Division I in shooting percentage, hitting 43.7 percent of their attempts from the floor. Solid shooting has been coupled with 16.4 assists per game, good for 31st in the nation. After hitting a scorching 54.8 percent, or 23-of-42, of its shots from distance last week, the Dons have leapt to 22nd in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage.
The Dons are led by senior
Taylor Proctor's 18.4 points on .500 shooting, 8.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 blocks per game.
Zhane Dikes adds 14.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals, and
Rachel Howard contributes 11.0 points on .374 shooting from beyond the arc and 3.0 assists a night.Â
Know the Foe
Santa Clara comes to the Hilltop riding a five game winning streak and sporting a 17-5 overall record. The Broncos are 8-3 in league action, currently sitting in fourth in the WCC standings.
The Broncos are paced by Lori Parkinson's 11.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. Morgan McGwire adds 10.1 points on .480 shooting and 5.8 rebounds for Santa Clara.
What 2 Watch 4
One of the WCC's premier offenses will take on one of the league's best defenses as the Dons and Broncos tip off at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Santa Clara's strength on the season is defense, where the Broncos rate fourth in the NCAA in steals per game (12.9), eighth in turnovers forced (22.5) and 47th in scoring defense (57.4 ppg). Conversely, the Dons' high-octane attack averages 72.1 points per game, 57th in the NCAA, and USF is shooting 36.1 percent from 3-point range, good for 22nd in the nation.
Series Snippits
The Broncos maintain a 51-36 lead in the all-time series with the Dons, earning wins in 11 of the last 12 meetings. USF's lone win over Santa Clara in the Azzi era came on Jan. 7, 2015, a 62-45 victory on the Hilltop paced by 24 points and nine rebounds for
Taylor Proctor.
Last Game Versus
USF couldn't hold onto the rock from the Leavey Center, as turnovers proved to be their demise in the 68-57 loss at Santa Clara.
The Dons committed a season-high 30 miscues on the day, leading to 26 points for the Broncos. The last 30-turnover game for the Dons occurred more than three years ago when USF faltered 34 times at Sacramento State on Nov. 28, 2012.Â
USF was led by a 15-point outing for
Anna Seilund, who swished four 3-pointers and went 3-for-4 from the line.
Zhane Dikes added 10 points and six rebounds and USF's only other double-digit scorer on the day.
Taylor Proctor finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Dons, halting a 25-game streak of double-digit scoring for the senior from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Last Time Out
On a day when USF honored its 1996 Sweet 16 team, the 2015-16 San Francisco women's basketball team made a place for themselves in program history as well. The Dons scored the first bucket of the game and never trailed to earn a big 71-52 win over the Bulldogs.
The victory was their first win over the 11-time WCC defending champions since a West Coast Conference tournament win on March 2, 2006. The 19-point deficit is also the largest loss of the season for Gonzaga, who lost to Stanford 65-48 on Nov. 15 during non-conference action.
Perhaps fitting for a day on which USF made history, it was the seniors who led the way.
Zhane Dikes got the Dons going early and finished with a game-high 20 points off a combination of strong drives to the rim and hot shooting from beyond the arc. But
Taylor Proctor might have been the standout player of the game doing just about everything for the Dons with 16 points, and game-highs of nine rebounds and six assists to perfectly complement Dikes' scoring aggression.
Triple Threat
USF is shooting .361 from long range on the season leaping to 22nd in the NCAA after a blazing hot weekend from outside. The Dons went 23-of-42 (.548) from distance while picking up wins against Portland and Gonzaga.
Individually,
Taylor Proctor (.388/6th),
Anna Seilund (.380/8th) and
Rachel Howard (.374/10th) all rate in the WCC's top 10 in 3-point percentage, and the Dons are one of two squads with multiple women on the list (Pepperdine).
70 - The Magic Number
The Dons are 12-1 on the season when scoring at least 70 points, with the loss coming at the hands of Utah Valley in a 94-88 overtime game on Nov. 23.
NCAA Active Career Leaders
Taylor Proctor currently stands as one of 10 women in the NCAA with at least 1,500 points and 800 rebounds. She is joined on the list of seniors by defending NCAA Player of the Year Breanna Stewart (UConn), Shereesha Richards (Albany), Jillian Alleyne (Oregon), Courtney Williams (South Florida), Nathalie Fontaine (Ball State), Joy Adams (Iona), Erika Livermore (Fairleigh Dickinson), Brittney Martin (Oklahoma State) and Talia Walton (Washington).Â
She ranks 36th among active Division I scoring leaders (1,584 points). She also lands in the top-40 among active players in field goals (587/35th) and double-doubles (23/37th). Fellow senior
Zhane Dikes rates 15th in NCAA Division I in career free throw attempts (558) and 18th in makes (405).
Playing the Percentages
Shooting 43.7 percent from the floor, the Dons have seven women over the .500-mark in true shooting percentage, which takes into account field goals, 3-pointers and free throws.
Raushan Gultekin (.624 ts%) and
Taylor Proctor (.591 ts%) lead the way, followed by
Zhane Dikes (.560 ts%),
Claudia Price (.555 ts%),
Anna Seilund (.536 ts%) and
Rachel Howard (.519 ts%). Albeit a small sample size, in freshman
Jaylin Jones' six games of action, her true shooting percentage comes in at 129 percent, as she is yet to miss an attempt (3-3 fg, 2-2 3fg, 2-2 ft) from the floor.
USF Record-Setters
The senior duo of
Taylor Proctor and
Zhane Dikes both grace USF's 1,000-point scoring list of 21 women as well as the 20-member 500-rebound club. Dikes notched her 500th rebound in USF's final non-conference game of the season against San Francisco State.Â
Along with her distinction on the points and rebounds lists, Dikes became the USF all-time leader in minutes played in USF's game at Santa Clara on Jan. 23. She is averaging more than 33 minutes per game in her career wearing Green and Gold, and passed Rheina Ale ('08-12 - 3,755 minutes) and men's minutes leader Angelo Caloiaro ('08-12 - 3,781 minutes) to earn the new school record.
Proctor leapt to fourth in all-time scoring in USF's victory over Gonzaga and she stands in third in rebounds, currently. She is one of five women to rate in the top-10 in both categories. In the Dons' game at Pacific, she joined career-leader and Legend of the Hilltop Mary Hile-Nepfel as the second woman to reach the top five in both points and rebounds.
Individually,
Rachel Howard etched her name in the record books after swishing seven 3-pointers at Long Beach State. The seven triple mark in a game ties Andrea Kagie (at San Diego, 02/08/97) and Amy Touli (Northwestern State, 12/19/92).
