USF's men's golf team will make the short drive down the peninsula this weekend to join one of the spring's strongest fields at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University.
Joining the Dons and Cardinal in the 25-team field will be squads from USC, North Carolina, Arizona, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Northwestern, Oregon, Pacific, Pepperdine, St. Mary's, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Southern Methodist, UC Davis, UCLA, UNLV and Yale.
USC is ranked first in the nation in the latest Golfstat.com rankings and No. 5 by Golfweek. Stanford is also ranked in the top-10 in the Golfstat.com poll, checking in at No. 8 while North Carolina is ranked 24th by Golfstat.com and 18th by Golfweek.
The 54-hole event will be contested over three days at Stanford Golf Course, which will play to 6,727 yards and a par of 70 for this event.
USF is expected to start a lineup consisting of Henry Chung, Sebastian Crookall-Nixon, Jalen Griffin, Kraig McLeod and Max Alcorn. USF will be paired with Yale and Colorado State for the first two days of the event. The Dons will tee-off from hole No. 10 at 1:20 Thursday afternoon and 8:25 a.m. from the first hole on Friday. Saturday's tee times and pairings will be based on the scores after the first two rounds.
Alabama-Birmingham won last year's event with a 23-under score of 817 while Stanford's Maverick McNealy, currently the second ranked amateur player in the world, and UAB's Will Cannon shared medalist honors at 13-under 197. The Dons tied for 18th in the 24-team field with a team score of 871 (+31) while Sebastian Crookall-Nixon was USF's top finisher, earning a share of 24th place at even par 210. The Englishman tied for sixth in this event as a freshman in 2012-13 with a 3-under score of 207.
Venerable Stanford Golf Course provides for plenty of birdie opportunities. The winning scores of the last three team champions have been between 23 and 25-under par while the last three medalists have posted between 13 and 15-under par for the 54-hole event.
The Dons have finished no lower than sixth in three spring events this season. In the team's last outing at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, the Dons shot a blistering 2-under 276 in their final round to jump five spots up the leaderboard into sixth place. Crookall-Nixon led the last day charge with a brilliant 7-under 65, while sophomore Henry Chung shot a final round 69 to earn a share of fifth place at 211 (-5).
Originally named the United States Intercollegiate, the event was renamed The Goodwin prior to the 2014 edition in honor of former Cardinal head coach Wally Goodwin, who coached at Stanford from 1983-2000 and led the Cardinal to the 1994 NCAA Championship.
