Dons Finish Fifth at Ptarmigan Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo.-- In the last day of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, USF wrapped up its first tournament of the fall in a tie for fifth place.
Despite an 11-over par round of 299, San Jose St. claimed the team competition with an 18 stroke victory over second place finishers UC Irvine. Gonzaga and Oregon State took the third and fourth spots, while the Dons and Nevada tied for fifth with a total score of 892 (+28).
My Leander of San Jose St. finished atop the leaderboard to claim medalist honors with a 6-under total of 210.
Junior Vanessa Ha scored the lowest among the Dons and finished in solo ninth after shooting a 2-over score of 218 (73-74-71). In her last 18 holes, Ha scored 1-over on the front nine, but tallied birdies on 14 and 16 to finish the third round at 1-under par.
Mabel Wong had a solid showing at the classic- finishing in a tie for 11th place after shooting a total of 220 (+4). The sophomore got her round off in solid fashion after scoring birdies on holes 3 and 5. Wong would get into trouble on 13 and 14, shooting the two holes a combined 4-over.
After opening the tournament with rounds of 77 and 73, Ayaka Suzuki battled all day to finish in a tie for 39th. Suzuki carded her lone birdie of the third round on the par 3 15th, en route to a total score of 230 (+14).
Allison Lillie finished the third round 3-over par for a score of 75. The senior had her best day today, which was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. Lillie finished the classic at 232 (+16).
In her first tournament as a Don, Samantha Gong also shot a 75 for her best round yet. Gong got off to a slow start, but bounced back in strong fashion with birdies on the par 5 5th and par 3 6th. The freshman carded a total of 235 (+19).
USF will be back in competition next week (Sept. 19-20) for the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at Almaden Country Club.
