The Dons At a Glance...
THIS PAST WEEKEND
- Dropped the series opener at Santa Clara, 3-2, as the Broncos scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nico Giarratano and Matt Siantro drove in USF's two runs on the night.
- USF rebounded with a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon behind Thomas Ponticelli's first career complete game where he struck out 10 in the effort. Ross Puskarich hit his second home run of the year as the Dons scored twice in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.
- In the series finale, USF exploded offensively in a 12-7 win, piling up 16 hits. Dominic Miroglio led the way by going 5-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Allen Smoot went 4-for-6 with three runs driven in and his second long ball of the year.
WHO'S HOT?
Dominic Miroglio is leading the team with a .475 (19-40) average over the last 10 games. Over that span, Miroglio has three doubles, a home run and six RBI while pacing the team with 11 runs scored.
Allen Smoot continues to swing a hot bat as well, hitting .368 (14-38) over that same stretch where he has contributed five doubles, a home run and seven RBI. On the mound, lefty
Scott Parker and right-hander Brenden Jenkins continue to pose a formidable late-game presence as neither have allowed an earned run over their last five appearances. Parker is 2-0 with seven strikeouts over his last seven innings of work, while Jenkins has earned a save while striking out eight in his last 6 2/3 innings.
SOMEBODY STOP THAT GUY
Matt Sinatro extended his season-long on-base streak to 22 games over the weekend. Sinatro is hitting .337 during his streak, having registered hits in all but three of those contests. He has drawn 15 walks over that span while sporting an on base percentage of .442.
DON'T EVEN TRY IT
Catcher
Dominic Miroglio has been the most difficult catcher in the West Coast Conference to run on this year, leading the WCC with 18 runners caught stealing. He has thrown out 55 percent of would-be base stealers on the year. The redshirt junior was named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list earlier this year.
CATCH AND THROW
The Dons have enjoyed steady defense all year long as they enter the week boasting the conference's best fielding percentage (.978), led by reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year in shortstop
Nico Giarratano, who has yet to commit an error in 178 chances.
Scouting Report
About Cal
The Bears swept USC in their most recent action this past weekend. They have enjoyed a steady blend of power and speed as they lead the Pac-12 in home runs (33) and stolen bases (45) as a team. Freshman infielder Andrew Vaughn has burst onto the scene and leads the conference in home runs (11) and RBI (43) while hitting a team-best .371. Right-hander Erik Martinez (2-2, 1.27) has been a productive stopper for the Bears with his five saves on the year. Head coach David Esquer is in his 18
th season at the helm.
Last Time Out
After two quiet offensive games in the series, the Dons' hitters exploded for 12 runs and 16 hits in a back-and-forth contest
to claim their second consecutive WCC series victory with a 12-7 win over Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Dominic Miroglio helped lead the offense by going 5-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while
Allen Smoot tallied four hits, including his second home run of the year, and drove in three runs.
Nico Giarratano doubled twice and drove in two and
Dan James went 2-for-3 to round out the Dons with multiple hits on the day. USF's 16 hits were the second most in a game this season and helped counter a rough outing for starter
Daniel Slominski, who allowed five runs on eight hits over just two-plus innings of work.
On Deck
Following Tuesday's game, the Dons head back out on the road for a three-game WCC series at BYU beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. Friday's game two is also slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch, while the series finale on Saturday will start at 1 p.m. from BYU's Miller Park.
