Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team out shot Oregon State 13-to-7 and had a 7-to-3 advantage on the corner kicks but lost, 1-0, to Oregon State in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon.
USF fell to 2-3-1 on the season while Oregon State picked up its second win of the season to move to 2-1-2.
"We played a lot more inspired than we did against UC Davis the other day but we have to finish our chances," said Dons head coach Jim Millinder. "We outshot them and had some really good looks but the game is about scoring goals."
The best scoring chance for USF (2-3-1) came in the 55th minute when Micaela Mercado delivered an over the top pass from midfield to a streaking Miciah Madison inside the box. Madison's shot was off target and sailed wide of the net.
Less than a minute later, an Oregon State player sent a cross that went through USF goalkeeper Olivia Camera's legs. However, Beaver Toni Malone could not poke the ball through on an empty net, as the game stayed scoreless.
The match remained 0-0 until the 77th minute when Oregon State's Paula Leblic picked up a loose ball off a corner kick and slotted it past Camera through a couple of USF defenders.
"It was a poor clearance off the corner kick. Leblic ran onto it and she was in good position and buried it," said Millinder. "We just can't give up unnecessary corner kicks."
Sonja Giraud led the Dons in shots and shots on goal with four and two, respectively.
USF will play another Pac-12 foe, Stanford, on Friday, September 8 in Stanford, Calif. Kick off is 7:00 p.m. PT.
